Shades of season two.
planktonrules1 May 2013
At the beginning of the show, Mannix quits working for Intertech and strikes off on his own. Although he goes back to work for the firm by the end of the show, it's sort of like 'shades of things to come', as starting in season two Mannix would become a private eye--an no longer an agency man.

Lew accepts an assignment to do a job for Aram Karmalis (Howard Da Silva). However, Mannix refuses the assignment, as he considers Karmalis to be a total scum-bag and won't work for him no matter the price. Lew insists and Mannix responds by quitting his job with Intertech.

In a seemingly unrelated case, the now independent Mannix has been hired to work for a lady whose boxer husband has lost his memory. Mannix assumes the guy is faking--after all, Mannix himself routinely gets his head smashed in and he hasn't lost his memory! Not surprisingly, the cases soon come together and once again Mannix ends up getting his brains beaten in again before the end of the show.

This is a decent episode--exciting and well done all around. However, one of the mistakes they made in the show can be seen in the first scene where Karmalis gets out of his car. If you look above, you can see the shadow of the boom microphone! Also, as long as you are looking for funny things, also get a load of Marcy's dress!!

Lots of moving parts in this plot

Warning: Spoilers
The show opens with boxer Steve Cade (Scott Marlowe) deliberately hurting himself in an "accident" at the gym. Then, in a seemingly unrelated action, Joe quits Intertect rather than do a job for crime boss Aram Karmalis (Howard Da Silva). Karmalis wants a necklace of his girlfriend Marcie (Marianna Hill) found. It is worth little money but has a high sentimental value. Joe smells a rat so won't take the case and he is the guy Karmalis wanted. One of the early episodes where the client is lying. We will see that about a thousand more times. Joe gets hired by the boxer's wife Arleen (Barbara Baldavin) to find the boxer's missing manager, Danny (Charles Wagenheim). The boxer is pretending amnesia so he can cover for the missing Danny. The coincidence is the boxer and manager both work for Karmalis, so Joe is competing with Intertect. Joe and Lew cross paths while following the same leads. Joe searches Danny's room and gets knocked out by the two goons working for Karmalis and then again by the boxer as Joe tries to get him to talk. Joe visits Marcie and when she leaves, someone takes a shot at her and kills a jeweler who was coming to see Marcie. Joe wanted to talk to him to as he made the necklace. Eventually Marcie tells Joe that Danny loves to do paint-by-numbers sets. Joe finds out that a shipment of these sets was sent to an empty warehouse. Joe goes there and finds Danny and Steve the boxer. Danny has the necklace which is worth a fortune (supposedly). The bad guys show up there and kills Danny. Lew comes in to support Joe and together they kill the two goons while their boss got away. Joe goes to Marcie's place and finds Karmalis there. Joe kills him but then arrests Marcie for killing the jeweler. Turns out the jeweler made the expensive necklace for Karmalis and then a cheap version for Marcie. Danny had the cheap one and he would take the rap for stealing it while Marcie kept the real one for herself. She killed the jeweler to keep him from saying he made two necklaces. Joe goes back to his Intertect job.

Lew spends a lot of time in the field for a guy running a big tech outfit. Seemed strange an Intertect guy is watching Danny's room but doesn't notice Joe didn't come out after the two goons came and went. He should have helped Joe out.

The cast is fine. Not the bigger guest stars that usually show up on Mannix but they get the job done. The plot is involved and you have to pay attention but it is a solid outing.

IT'S TIME FOR JOE MANNIX TO SPLIT!
tcchelsey12 January 2023
I agree with the last reviewer, and I wrote about it in the last review, this episode was a prelude to the next season --Joe is going solo! More over, after that slam-bang fight between Joe and Wickersham a few episodes back, you just knew something was up.

The title... YOU CAN GET KILLED OUT THERE also has a little hidden meaning.

Dorothy Herald wrote this episode, who later wrote for THE SNOOP SISTERS. The only cautionary note here is that she followed the same route of her male colleagues, another adventure you have to watch very carefully OR you will miss something quickly. Only leave the room during commercials.

One of the most memorable tough guys, Howard da Silva, long in Hollywood, is perfect as a gangsta' called Aram Karmalis. Here's the catch. Wickersham agrees to go to work for him and Joe QUITS on the spot! Of course.... there's a valuable necklace at stake and Mannix is back on the job doing it HIS way. And that's what all of us big kids loved.

Mariana Hill guest stars as Marcie, much like da Silva, quite popular on tv. She played Cleo Patrick on BATMAN. Cult status assured. In films, her most recognized role was as Fredo's drunken wife in THE GODFATHER, PART II. Watch for it.

In the spot the face department; funny lady Jody Gilbert (in many B films and tv shows) plays Kitty and old time boxer Noble "Kid" Chissel plays a diner patron. Kid appeared in westerns and tv shows, such as GUNSMOKE for years and the casting people always got him a gig.

This was the only action episode directed by Louis Brandt, who served as assistant director for a string of cult movies in the 50s. He knew his stuff, and handles the cast well.

By the way. Just before this episode, Howard da Silva narrated an iconic tv commercial for Vicks formula 44 cough syrup, starring Odd Job from GOLDFINGER. It also features Mrs. Odd Job! I think it was filmed at the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank and he wrecks the neighborhood! It is outrageous and I believe is in the tv commercial hall of fame (1967). Google it.

10 STARS. SEASON 1 EPISODE 19. Remastered CBS dvd box set.
