Great episode

With a wonderful guest turn by Pat Carroll as Mary's grumpy hospital roommate, the show gently moved from great sitcom into the realm of great theatre.

I'm sharing with a go-go dancer

Funny episode with some great interactions among the regulars.

The main part of the episode has Mary go to hospital where she must share with Loretta, a gruff woman not enamored with Mary's chirpy personality (or the sexy nightie Rhoda slipped into Mary's bag).

The scenes are funny and you can kinda see why Loretta got exasperated, especially when all their visitors come at once.

Taking a hint is not Mary's strong suit.

Warning: Spoilers
The Mary Richards character is nothing if not a chipper, cheerful, and happy soul almost all of the time. Which is just great, for Mary that is. Most people around Mary do react positively to her happy and upbeat demeanor, almost all of the time. The thing is,every single person around her is not always in the mood for Mary's perky good-cheer,all of the time. Different people have their own different moods and issues and they aren't always ready or in the mood themselves to deal with Mary's chatty and perky cheerfulness. Someone that doesn't know Mary very-well could easily find Mary's perkiness to be forced, phony,or even condescending and rather annoying, despite Mary's good intentions.

The problem is,Mary lacks the self-awareness to realize that some people do indeed get annoyed with her chronic, effusive and excessive perkiness and cheer.

Mary is in the hospital for a couple of days for a minor tonsil operation. She has a hospital room that she shares with another lady. The room-mate is just not very happy with Mary's endless good cheer and she is rather gruff towards Mary.

Mary, for her part, cannot or will not take some clear and increasingly-obvious hints of the room-mate's aggravation, and simply tone it down a bit ! Even better,Mary could, and should, try something really new,and just be quiet for awhile and not speak until spoken to by her aggravated and annoyed hospital room-mate. Expecting Mary to 'put a lid on it' however is like wishing on a star ! It's not going to happen,or if it does it won't last very-long.

Mary's room-mate at the hospital,'Loretta' is just a few years older than Mary but the two of them don't have much in common besides sharing a hospital room. Loretta is living a troubled life that is seemingly chock-full of problems and worries both big and small. Some of Loretta's problems are self-inflicted and some of them are caused by other people, but either way she has a lot on her mind and has little time or patience with or for Mary's carefree bubbly enthusiasm.

Mary on the other hand just doesn't seem to notice her roommate is steadily becoming aggravated with all of the forced conversation and good cheer. Mary also doesn't miss a beat while she continues full-speed-ahead with the constant chit-chat.

All in all this is mildly aggravating but it is still a pretty funny episode. 8/10.

Just a Little Sexist
Hitchcoc1 February 2017
Mary has a tonsil grow back and must have surgery to remove it. Since it is usually a kid problem, she is embarrassed to tell her co-workers. Lou gets it out of her and is quite critical. When she goes to the hospital, Rhoda substitutes a sexy little nightgown for her more conservative one. This is one of those instances where the producers played on Mary Tyler Moore's attractiveness for effect. It's a little thing but she was quite striking. When she meets her roommate, Loretta (played by Pat Carrol whom I remember from game shows), the woman is incredibly hostile to her. Mary, in her perky way, tries to befriend her but to no avail. At times this is funny, but ultimately, I found it to be a little sad. Another thing. I've had kids with tonsils removed as well as my own experience. Mary recovered awfully fast. It's not like that for a few days.

Maybe Will Rogers was wrong...
planktonrules6 February 2024
Will Rogers' most famous quote was "I never met a man I didn't like". Well, obviously he never met anyone like Loretta (Pat Carrol)...the featured guest in this episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"!

The plot to this episode is pretty simple. Mary has to go to the hospital to have a tonsil removed (not tonsils...just one). However, the chirpy Mary is dismayed to find that her roommate, Loretta, is a....well, a very unpleasant person (I cannot say the word due to IMDB restrictions). Mary tries hard until ultimately facing a fact...some people are just unpleasant jerks.

This is just an okay episode...at best. My wife hated it because too often Mary is a giant doormat...and she certainly is here because she seems so desperate to have everyone like her. Worth seeing...just so you can see what 'Ursula' from "The Little Mermaid" (Pat Carrol) looked like in real life.
