Rhoda and the Chimp
Hitchcoc13 February 2017
In this episode, Rhoda gets together with one of the owners of Hempel's Department Store where she works as a window director. He is a big handsome guy. As a matter of fact, he's the kind of guy Mary is always dating. The problem is that she is so negative about herself that she gets pushy. There is lots of angst in this relationship. The other plot line is a documentary about chimps that Mary produced that got good reviews in the newspaper. Ted gets into the act and demeans the work Mary does. This is a somewhat forgettable episode. We know that Rhoda will blow the relationship and that Ted will be upstaged by the chimp. There is a funny promo at the end, but it doesn't rescue the rest of the show.

Rhoda's romance
Rrrobert15 October 2019
This is a well-written, well-acted, naturalistic episode.

Rhoda falls madly in love with the heir to Hemples department store but Mary urges her to take things slowly. Mary's documentary about chimps is a success and she organises a promo for its repeat run.

All works well and there are enough laughs despite the realistic tone.

Starting this episode the establishing shots for Mary's apartment show a different building.

Cringeworthy behavior from Rhoda that goes on and on...

Valerie Harper is truly a talented actress,I really like her.

As Mary's friend Rhoda Morganstern, she is quite a character indeed. Even under the best of circumstances, character Rhoda Morganstern is pushy, obnoxious, and very annoying. I am really not sure why Mary even has her as a friend, other than the fact that Rhoda lives in the same apartment building as Mary. I also cannot say what positive things Rhoda contributes to the relationship between herself and Mary,as she seems to be nothing but trouble and headaches. Rhoda is someone that is best dealt with in very small doses for very short periods of time, but with Rhoda that is rarely an option.

Considering her typical behavior,it is no big surprise that Miss Rhoda doesn't exactly have men fighting over her. (Rhoda would drive a Saint crazy !)

In this episode,Rhoda catches the interest of one of the managers at the store she works at. This guy isn't just any manager,he is a member of the family "Hemple" that owns the store "Hemple's " !

This manager also happens to be a good and decent man, making him solid dating (and maybe even marriage) material.

Rhoda simply needs to play it cool, take it slowly, enjoy some dates with the man,and let things develop naturally over time. If she can simply do this, and the two of them manage to get along well, they just might have a happy future together!

The problem is,in 1 word,Rhoda.

In all of her dealings and interactions with this man,Rhoda is simply 'too-much,all at once',in fact she is 'much-too-much' !

Rhoda's behavior is ridiculous here and it would drive any man away (for the sake of his sanity) in a very-short time period.

The basic problems here are simple. Rhoda is pushy to the point of being obnoxious. She is selfish. She is annoying. She is neurotic.

What, you may wonder,is the main way that these problems show themselves ?

Rhoda cannot,will-not,simply be quiet and listen-to anyone. (If she does,it isn't for long). Rhoda rambles on, and on,and on,until even the most patient person is ready to throttle her.

Rhoda cannot imagine that anyone besides her has anything to say that is worth listening to or caring about. In Rhoda's mind, all of Rhoda's insecurities, worries, and troubles are all 'major emergencies' that are of much-higher priority than anyone else's.

That,in a nutshell,is the trouble here that dooms the relationship before it starts.

Mr Hemple dodged a landmine here for sure.

This is a very good episode with solid acting by all. It definitely showcases the many problems that Rhoda has,yet seems to be quite unaware of having!

8/10 at least.

Rhoda's love life - too fast
marthagavaghan25 August 2022
I realize that Rhoda wants to get married but as i watch some of the episodes i see that she is in a hurry to get married. Doesn't want to get to know her dates very well. I don't understand why she is in a big hurry?
