Ted's Moving In
Hitchcoc4 February 2017
An apartment in Mary's building becomes available. Mary and Rhoda find out for the first time that Lars and Phyllis are the apartment managers. Phyllis ask Mary to check at the station to see if there's anyone there who needs an apartment. Unfortunately, despite Lou's efforts to hide the news from Ted, who is looking for a place, Ted grabs the note from the bulletin board and starts the process of renting the apartment. During a brief visit to Mary's, it is obvious that he is going to be about as high maintenance as can be. Mary has to do something. There is a hilarious scene where Ted's lawyer (a college kid), Phyllis, and Ted go into Lou's office without his permission. The blocks start to tumble. This is a really funny episode.

Really funny well done episode.

A nice apartment in Mary's building becomes vacant. It is too expensive for Mary, and Mary and Rhoda don't want to ruin a friendship by sharing. They also discover, in a funny scene, that Lars and Phyllis manage the building (badly).

Unfortunately Ted learns of the vacancy and wants to move in. He soon has plans for Mary to drive him to work and for Mary and Rhoda to take his phone messages and do his ironing and sewing repairs.

There's a great scene where everyone piles into Lou's office for the reading of the lease with Ted's lawyer - a college kid. Ted quibbles with Phyllis about rent and clauses while Lou uses cunning to discourage the move as Mary doesn't want Ted there.

There's an unusual opening scene focused on Mary's neighbour Yvonne (Barbara Gardner) who's vacating the apartment. I guess that bit covered all the required back-story. She's almost like a trial run for the later Sherry played by the superb Barbara Colby.

Some friends are best kept at an arm's length for the very sake of the friendship !

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a great one, because everyone can relate to the basic idea of the story-in one way or another. We've all known, and worked with people that are indeed fun to spend time with and be around-but only in 'small-doses',ie short intervals of time. Why? Because after a very short time, the things that we found humorous and appealing about the person become an unbearable drag and an annoyance!

The irreplaceable Ted Knight plays the part of "Ted Baxter",a guy that everyone likes-(or at least puts-up with) at work.

The problem starts here when careless talk reaches Ted about a new vacancy in Mary's apartment building and he starts talking about moving into the vacant apartment ! Naturally this causes much anxiety as the reality of the situation starts to sink in with everyone. Ted is just not someone that people want to deal with continuously!
