This is a great episode. Lou goes into the hospital because doctors have determined that some shrapnel that was lodged somewhere (we can imagine where it is) is moving around and needs to be removed. He keeps it a secret until the day he heads off for surgery because he hates attention. Mary is given the job of running the newsroom. She becomes a bit power hungry, correcting Murray's work and offending him. While Lou is in the hospital, Ted does some kindnesses for him and Lou begins to think of him as a friend. The best part is the last minute when a major news story with film is given to Ted at the closer of the newscast. There are some really cool interactions among the principal characters.

The raging inferno

One of the greats.

Lou is in hospital for a week and bonds with frequent and attentive visitor Ted. Mary is in charge of the newsroom but she and Murray clash.

A key episode in the development of character and relationship for the newsroom regulars. The comedy comes naturally from the situation.

Ted's improvised newscast is a comic tour de force.

Laugh out loud funny

This episode is a great example of why The Mary Tyler Moore Show was one of the best sitcoms ever, and provided a template later sitcoms would try and mostly fail to copy.

Lou Grant is taking a few days off to have a piece of WWII shrapnel removed from his posterior and doesn't want anyone to know. Of course, word gets out, and there are amusing scenes when Mary, Murray, and especially Ted visit in the hospital ... and the scenes with Ted are, in a major surprise, touching.

But it's the end of the episode where the laughs rival only those of the famous Chuckles the Clown funeral. Ted decides to do an on-air tribute to Lou. Find it and watch it. Not only were my wife and I howling, but getting some laughter tears at the same time.
