The new writer in Mayberry
JordanThomasHall21 October 2019
Mayberry is abuzz about a new couple that's moved into town from New York. The man, Frank Wylie (character actor Richard Erdman, "Staglag 13") tells Goober that he's a writer hoping a change of scenery will inspire his creativity. Aunt Bee presides over her book club a "stimulating disagreement" over "Moby Dick". Sam walks in to inform the club that the man who moved to town is a writer. They decide to ask him to address their next meeting. Howard and Aunt Bee discuss it Mrs. Wylie (Emmaline Henry, "Rosemary's Baby", "I Dream of Jeannie") who accepts on his behalf. It inspires other townspeople to join the book club. They turn down Goober, however, privately feeling his intellect doesn't match theirs and relegated to the "Monsters From Outer Space" comic book series. Unknown to all, Mr. Wylie is the writer of that comic strip. Sam invites Goober to the book club meeting with the members fearing the worst. Mr. Wylie's new concept is a shocking revelation to the members.

Contrasting social rank and positions
jaimenote-862828 December 2023
A common theme for this series is to contrast a slow rural community and lifestyle with outsiders and their more sophisticated, faster paced lifestyles.

Competition among the Maybury locals typically lead to comedic awkwardness and sensitive situations that call upon the usual friendly heroes and their traditional values to unravel the latest, "situation."

This episode follows a young couple who are relocating to Maybury to experience a change of scenery for inspiration purposes. Certain members of the Maybury social circle might their feathers ruffled but as the dust settles, we see the usual warmth and innocence that keeps us coming back to this familiar, small community for more of what they offer.

Horrendous script.

When "Mayberry RFD" episodes are bad...they're realllllllly bad. Not a lot of good points to this episode. Emmett Clark's (Paul Hartman) interpretation of "Moby Dick" was somewhat amusing. Goober Pyle's (George Lindsey) forgiving nature after being blackballed by the literary club was commendable.

Two real highlights of the episode. The maroon black roof car driven by Richard Erdman as Frank Wylie was really an eye catcher. Then speaking of eye catchers stunning Emmaline Henry (Mrs Bellow's from "I Dream of Jeannie") as Mrs. Wylie lit up the screen with her beauty. Episode would be a real time waster without the treat of seeing her in it.
