At least the script was different.

When a rock-and-roll star, Harley Hatfield, that has been assigned to the Navy makes his way to Taratupa, he causes a near riot wherever it goes. Binghamton is not impressed with the young man and sends him over to McHale island to be part of his crew. Harley is a very special visitor and is suppose to be treated with kid like gloves. But what Harley really wants to do is capture some Japanese but he is so lazy and girl-crazy that he would be useless in a real fight.

So McHale plans a fake mission where Tinker will pose as a Japanese and then they will let Harley capture him. But when they get to the place where Tinker is hidden, they find that there is real Japanese on the island. Harley goes in full force and is captured by the enemy.

Admiral Steinholtz is on his way to the island to see the young singer. Little does he know that he is now held by the Japaneses and it looks like Binghamton is in trouble.

This was a clever script that dealt into something that has never been done in the series. And there is a funny scene when Ensign Parker stands in for the singer at a concert. But the story just did not leave the viewer with an entertained feeling. By the end of the show, with the captured soldiers sitting in the audience, it felt more like a poorly filmed high school sock-hop that a nation-wide comedy sitcom. But I will give props to the writers for at least trying to introduce a new story.
