After It Happened Episode
mlmassey30 January 2016
I have been searching for Midnight Caller for years and finally found it. This episode reminded me of why I thought it was important enough to keep looking for. AIDS was still a new disease and terrifying everyone thinking person (not those idiots who kept thinking it was 'a curse from G-d'). This episode was the first with Kay Lenz's character that dealt with what it truly was, and how it effected the different populations. This show was always well written and well acted, but seldom so relevant as this storyline at the time it was initially released. And even almost 30 years later, with AIDS not the automatic death sentence it was then, it's still relevant.

Ahead of its time

Warning: Spoilers
Mimi Leder directed After it Happened, which was way ahead of its time with the treatment of AIDS especially in San Francisco. This episode drew much controversy amongst the LGBTI community and there was even a special 30 minute broadcast which gave opponents of this episode the right to response. Definitely a delicate episode with Jack's political incorrectness in full force.

After It Happened

The third episode and it was this episode that set Midnight Caller apart from its contemporaries.

In hindsight it might look hokey. At the time it was both daring and provocative.

Tina Cassidy, Jack's former girlfriend returns and tells him that she has got AIDS.

Tina had a one night stand with a man who is deliberately going round and spreading it to both men and women.

Jack wants to track the man down but he seems to have vanished.

The radio show format allows the show to air diverse views, some of them ignorant.

This was a controversial episode when it was broadcast in the late 1980s.
