- A four-member syndicate owns a racehorse that two of them are desperate to sell and two of them are determined to keep. When one of them is murdered, Barnaby is on the case.
- Barnaby and Scott enter the world of horse racing when the trainer of thoroughbred Bantling Boy is battered to death. Bruce Hartley was an alcoholic who had vowed to expose the reason why his father bequeathed the horse to four Midsomer villagers. The other members of the syndicate come under suspicion, but the killing continues - then Bantling Boy falls ill. The detectives must unravel secrets hidden at the aristocratic Bantling Hall to find the killer.—Anonymous
- Baron Bruce Hartley's father left him the title and indebted estate, which his mother maintains with her simpleton brother Geoffrey , plus a quarter share of Midsommer's only home-bred champion horse, which just won a race earning a fat bid from dodgy businessman Sam Tate. Unlike co-owners Trevor Machin, the former estate gardener in a wheelchair having 'broken his back', and Joanna Craxton, the lord's former nurse married to blacksmith Ray, whose son often plays with Georrfrey, Bruce refused to sell Bantling Boy and compelled fourth partner Dr. Osgood to do the same. Shortly after, Bruce and later Osgood are murdered with horse care tools. Barnaby posts poor Scott in the stable to wait for the mystery intruder wrongly suspected of rendering the horse sick, who turns out fired stable-hand Jake Foley, who loves the horse but was denied riding it. The surviving syndicate partners now have their shares doubled, but Tate halves his bid for 'tainted goods'. Yet that's not all the puzzle pieces.—KGF Vissers
- DCI Barnaby and Sgt Scott investigate the murder of Bruce Hartley, a horse trainer who was found dead at Lodge Stables. The man was badly beaten and the murders seem related to the thoroughbred horse he was training, Bantling Boy. The horse was owned by a syndicate and there was some dispute over selling him. However, as the murder count continues to grow, Barnaby learns how the syndicate came to own the horse and who owns it now that they are all dead. He also learns that the murders were to hide a family secret and restore the Bantling name.—garykmcd
