Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters a room that Tipton philosophically calls his "Laboratory of Truth." Tipton is seated in a high-backed chair with only his right hand, which is holding a test tube, visible to the viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, ever hear of inee?

    Michael Anthony : Inee?

John Beresford Tipton : [Indicating the test tube he is holding]  That's inee in the tube. A rather remarkable substance, Mike. It looks innocent enough, but it's actually a deadly poison. Certain South American Indian tribes use it most effectively on the tips of their poisoned arrows.

Michael Anthony : Oh, yes, sir. I have read about it. And isn't it true that doctors have discovered other uses for it? That, in some cases, it also saves lives?

John Beresford Tipton : That's right, Mike. I was just reflecting on the fact that the destroyer sometimes works as a savior.

[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike.

    [Anthony bows and departs]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony rushes up to a military airplane about to depart. He catches up to Lt. Garrison about halfway up the mobile stairway to the plane's entrance]  Lt. Garrison!

    Jack Garrison : Yes?

Michael Anthony : May I speak to you a moment, please, in private?

Jack Garrison : Private? But we're taking off right now.

Michael Anthony : [Insistent]  I'll be brief, Lieutenant. My name is Michael Anthony.

Jack Garrison : [Over the roar of the plane's engine]  What?

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. I have a gift for you. A check

[Anthony looks around to ensure privacy]

Michael Anthony : for a million dollars.

[Anthony hands the check to Garrison]

Jack Garrison : [Reading the check]  Now, now wait a minute, sir. This is a check for a million dollars. But who...?

Michael Anthony : I can only tell you that it's a gift from an anonymous benefactor. But it is yours, to use in any way you wish, providing you agree to a certain condition.

    [Producing a document]

Michael Anthony : You must sign this agreement.

    Jack Garrison : Sign this?

Michael Anthony : Yes. As you see, you merely pledge never to reveal to anyone, except your wife, in the event you marry, the amount of this gift or how you received it. If you do, you forfeit whatever is left of it.

Jack Garrison : You mean this is on the level? Thi is mine?

    [Anthony nods, smiling]

Jack Garrison : Boy, what I can do with a million bucks!

[Garrison signs the pledge and returns it to Anthony]

Jack Garrison : why, now I can do anything I...

    [pauses]

Jack Garrison : You know what I can do with this? Nothing!

Michael Anthony : I beg your pardon?

Jack Garrison : What a time to get a million bucks. Imagine sitting down there at the South Pole with a million dollars. Talk about frozen assets!

Sergeant : [Approaching Garrison]  Lieutenant, everybody's on. We're taking off!

Jack Garrison : Just a minute, Sergeant.

    [to Anthony, shaking hands]

Jack Garrison : Thank you, sir.

Michael Anthony : Good luck, Lieutenant.

Jack Garrison : It sure is! But couldn't we have gotten together sometime earlier?

    Sergeant : Lieutenant!

Jack Garrison : [to Anthony]  Later?

    Sergeant : Lieutenant!

    Jack Garrison : Okay, okay.

[Garrison and the sergeant ascend the stairway. Anthony has returned to the ground and waves]

  • Michael Anthony : [Voiceover while Garrison and Williams set about their duties at the South Pole]  Being confined together in the most desolate part of the world for any length of time would be nerve-shredding for any two men. But at the end of two weeks, Phil Williams was already at the breaking point. For here he was, locked in with the man he feared would destroy the woman he loved.

  • Michael Anthony : [Holding a biography, to the viewers]  Jack Garrison was the name on the envelope that Mr. Tipton handed to me that day. Jack was in the Air Force when our story opened. He had left behind a job and a girl. That had been three years before - too long for a girl like Helen Rawlings to wait. Her romantic interest now was Phil Williams.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years, I was executive secretary to the late John Beresford Tipton, whose practice it was the bestow gifts of $1,000.000, tax-free. I was also, you might say, the official biographer of the Tipton-made millionaires, carefully chronicling their lives. These accounts were as precious to Mr. Tipton as Silverstone itself. Silverstone - the magnificent 60,000-acre estate in the grand tradition, where he devoted the major part of his time to intellectual pursuits. Of all his varied interests, the most searching one was his preoccupation with the mystery of man. I recall the day he summoned me to the place he philosophically termed the Laboratory of Truth.
