  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony is escorted by a nurse to a park bench outside Fairfield Rest Home, where Jane Carr has been residing for some time following a breakdown after her reporter-husband was murdered. The nurse departs]  Mrs. Carr, my name is Michael Anthony.

Jane Carr : Please go away. I can't talk to anyone.

Michael Anthony : Your doctor thinks differently. He tells me you've completely recovered from your breakdown. You can leave whenever you have the will to.

Jane Carr : [Disbelieving]  Can I?

    Michael Anthony : Mrs. Carr,

    [Opening his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : I represent an anonymous individual who read about your tragedy and wishes to express his deepest sympathy. He realizes that money cannot compensate for a loss such as yours, but for reasons of his own, he has selected you

    [Displaying a check]

Michael Anthony : to receive this gift. This check is yours - $1,000,000, tax-free.

Jane Carr : [Becoming upset, calling out]  Nurse? Nurse!

Michael Anthony : [Quickly sitting on the bench beside Jane]  Please, Mrs. Carr, I can assure you this is absolutely legitimate. It's a cashier's check, and it's yours to spend in any way you wish, with only one qualification.

    [produces a document]

Michael Anthony : You'll have to sign this pledge not to reveal the source or the amount of this gift to anyone. Otherwise the money, or whatever is left of it, must be returned to the donor.

Jane Carr : [Holding the check]  I don't care if it's $5 or $5,000,000, you can return it right now.

    [Hands check back to Anthony]

Jane Carr : Give it to somebody who can be happy with it. Some nice young couple.

Michael Anthony : But, Mrs. Carr... .

Jane Carr : Funny. Ken and I used to talk about what we would do if we were millionaires. He always wanted to make something of his life, to make the world a better place to live in. That's why they killed him. It's unbelievable that there can be so much evil in the world. I wish I was strong enough. I'd destroy them with my bare hands.

Michael Anthony : Mrs. Carr, a million dollars can be a much more effective weapon than anyone's bare hands.

[Hands the check back to Jane]
