Viva Ray Daley!
granty-951715 March 2021
I used to dismiss the Ray Daley era as Minder lite; it's rather hit & miss but they've grown on me down the years and this is a pretty good episode which captures the mood of the early 90s satellite boom. Arthur's cowboy firm has been hired by a sinister Italian businessman to install a dish at his country residence, and predictable choas ensues.

Pete Postlethwaite (an ex wireman called Logie!) makes a very welcome return, and Fingers Rossetti is a great villain with a name to match, and the way Arthur protects his own digits every time they meet is properly funny.

Another great scene is when Arthur asks Logie to supply him with a shotgun for a clay pigeon shoot - you can guess the rest but it's still very funny.

Apart from the sub plot involving Rossetti's daughter dragging on a bit, i really enjoyed this one. Best line : Ray-"I heard Billy moved to South America." Arthur-"Not all of him."

Funny is back on track
After four consecutive overly serious episodes, Minder gets back on track with an episode with the proper mix of villainy and comedy.

Daley buys a load of satellite dishes and sees an opportunity to profit installing them around the manor. Hires old sparky Logie, played by none other than Pete Postlethwaite. The versatility of that man, veteran of the proper theatre, a previou guest spot on Minder (1982) and at the time of this episode on the verge of a Hollywood breakthrough in such films as The Usual Suspects, where he memorably played Kobayashi. By gawd, if Wiki is to be believed he even had a relationship with Julie Walters (Educating Rita). What a champ.

The other pat of the episode has mafioso Fingers Rozetti calling Daley Enterprises to having a satellite dish installed so he and his mates can watch La Squadra Azzura. Unfortunately, instead of focusing on installing the dish, Ray gets involved as a matchmaker for Rozetti's daughter. This is an incredibly banal sub-plot that ranks as one of the most pathetic in the entire Minder canon.

Luckily, Ray's wandering leaves Arthur and Logie to climb the roof on Rozetti's house to install the dish. Logie's afraid of heights and Daley's barely any better. What ensues is a very funny physical and verbal comedy interplay between Postlethwaite and George Cole. I'll give the writers credit for at least remembering that Minder fans wanted comedy,.

In the end a bit of a split decision.

The Roof of All Evil (Feb 25, 1993)

Warning: Spoilers
Series 9 Episode 8

Arthur's latest business venture is Daley Into Space, satellite dish installation. Arthur is buying all the equipment from Gunter, a German contact. When Ray struggles with the complex equipment and German instructions, Arthur tells Ray he knows an expert, Logie Lawson.

They visit Logie, whose house is fitted with seemingly faulty electrical equipment. Arthur offers Logie, a former criminal, a job as the dish installer. Logie seems confident the work should be easy. Arthur tells Logie that Ray will be helping him.

At the Winchester Arthur talks Dave into purchasing a dish at a reduced price. Later at the lock up, Arthur receives a call about a problem with a dish installation. Arthur drives to where Ray and Logie are installing a dish. Arthur informs them they are at the wrong house. They should be on the next street. The angry owner of the house arrives home and Arthur has to talk his way out of trouble.

Arthur is having doubts about Logie. Ray tells Arthur he took a new order for a dish from Franko "Fingers" Rossetti. Arthur panics and tells Ray that Fingers has a terrible temper and got his nickname from collecting peoples fingers. Arthur wants to cancel the job. Ray refuses. Ray tells Arthur he knows Fingers daughters, Sophia and Isabella. Arthur summises Ray took the job because he likes Sophia, which Ray dismisses as Sophia is married and Isabella was a child the last time he saw her.

Arthur and Ray arrive at Fingers house to witness him yelling at a man and telling him to never come back. The man drives away. Fingers is happy to see Ray and Arthur. Arthur is very nervous. A grown up Isabella says hello to Ray. It was her boyfriend her father told to leave. Fingers says he must protect his daughter. Arthur attempts to get out of the job by telling Fingers it is very expensive and he should find someone else. He dismisses Arthur's concerns.

Back at the lock up Arthur remains insistant Ray took the job because of an attraction to Isabella, which Ray denies. At the Winchester, Arthur, Dave and some customers watch the installed satalite TV in silence, as Logie can't get the sound working properly.

Ray meets Isabella. She asks him to find an old school friend, Steve Johnson, her boyfriend. Ray guesses Steve is the man Isabella's father chased from his house. She tells Ray she and Steve are going to get married but her father doesn't like him due to his past reputation. Isabella says Steve wants to end the relationship because of her father and she can't contact him. Arthur drives past and sees Ray and Isabella together and assumes they are on a date.

At the lock up Ray takes a call from Isabella. Arthur remains suspicious. Later, whilst Ray and Logie work on the installation, Arthur drinks with Fingers. Isabella sneaks out to Ray to ask for an update. He has no news yet. Fingers invites Arthur clay pigeon shooting. Arthur sees Ray climbing a ladder outside, assumes he is going to Isabella's room and rushes out to knock Ray off the ladder.

Later, Isabella leaves a letter for Ray before running away from home.

At the Winchester Ray nurses a sore head. Arthur tells Logie he needs a gun for clay pigeon shooting.

Ray locates Steve playing pool. Steve tells Ray he and Isabella are finished because of her father. The following day whilst Ray is installing the dish he is detained by Fingers men.

Logie gives Arthur a gun for clay pigeon shooting. Fingers tells Arthur he has invited some friends to his house later that night to watch football on his new dish. Arthur discovers the gun Logie gave him is an old antique. Fingers is amused and offers Arthur the use of his gun. Ray is brought to Fingers with the letter.

Back at the house Fingers questions Ray and threatens him. Ray tells him he has been helping Isabella and he isn't afraid of Fingers before leaving. Arthur can't stop Ray, leaving Arthur and Logie on their own. Ray returns to speak to Steve playing pool. He tells Steve Isabella has disappeared.

Logie only gets a few steps up the ladder before freezing and revealing he is afraid of heights. He won't let go of the ladder. Fingers tells Arthur he will be very upset if he and his friends can't watch the football match later. Fingers tells Arthur he can get to the roof through the attic. Arthur and Logie climb out the attic window onto the roof and Logie immediately freezes. They abandon their attempts to install the dish but find the attic window has closed and locked behind them, leaving them stranded on the roof.

Ray and Steve find Isabella at an old schoold hang out. Steve tells Isabella he didn't want them to break up, but her father will never accept him. Isabella says they never have to see her father again but Ray intervenes. Ray returns to see Fingers to tell him Isabella is leaving home to marry Steve and will contact her father later. Fingers says if she runs off they are finished, but Ray argues the case for Steve and for Fingers to accept him for his daughters sake.

Up on the roof Arthur and Logie see Ray driving away. They try to get his attention but have no luck. Arthur and Logie use Logie's work uniform to create a help sign reading "Daley Plenty Panic." Finger's friends arrive for the football. Arthur begins to throw roof tiles down to the ground to attract attention. After being rescued Arthur apologises to Fingers, who points out the tiles only hit one car windscreen, which happens to be Arthur's Jaguar.

Ray returns with Isabella and Steve. Fingers hugs his daughter and shakes hands with Steve.

Before the football match begins Arthur apologises to Fingers friends for any inconvienience caused. When he turns on the TV the match is China vs South Korea. Fingers friends become restless. Arthur shouts up the chimney to Logie, who is strapped to the chimney on the roof, holding the satalite dish. He tilts the dish until the channel changes and Italy come on the TV. Ray tells Arthur that Logie will freeze to death. Arthur says they will take him some soup at half time.
