The first IM Force episode involving criminals instead of governments.
planktonrules4 February 2014
Anastas Poltroni (Lloyd Bridges) is a drug dealer who is in a country which won't extradite him to the US to face his crimes. So, the team needs to somehow get him out of this country and back to the States for prosecution.

This show bears a lot of similarity to the later episodes of "Mission: Impossible". Whereas the earlier shows are almost exclusively about missions involving the Iron Curtain and dictators, later they featured mobsters and the like--as the producers of the show made a conscience choice to change the anti-commie tone of the show. I didn't mind a few of these shows, though all of them have one huge problem--you wonder why they simply don't go into this country and put a bullet in the baddie's head! Why all the mumbo jumbo if the show is about crime and not espionage? This is a weakness in "Fakeout".

Another weakness of the show is that several times during the show, there is no way of predicting exactly what Paltroni will do--and the plot relies on him behaving a certain way. Plus, at one point in the show, they actually capture him and then deliberately let him go--even though they should have just kept him! Unnecessarily complex at times.

By the way, I know there are some Sid Haig fans out there, so look for him as Poltroni's henchman. However, look fast as he meets his end rather quickly. Also, on a big-screen TV, watch for the extreme closeups of Bridges when he's with Cinnamon in the hotel room. You can see that his mustache is fake--and you can see the backing on it. I doubt if folks back in 1966 could see this, but thanks to big HD screens, you can spot this. And, if you are looking for Rollin or Willy--don't, as they're not in this one (but I think it's Rollin's voice on the rape recorder late in the episode).

HOW MUCH ARE YOU GOING TO GET FOR ME? TWO CENTS!!

The title of this episode could have been a "working title" for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, because these guys faked everybody out with precision and class through the years.

This was a one of a kind show, and it's interesting to see the evolvement of the series particularly the early episodes with Steven Hill as the IMF chief. Hill was a terrific lead, however, due to religious beliefs he would not work at night, which eventually cost him his job and the entrance of Peter Graves as the new boss.

Man of action Lloyd Bridges, who had recently starred in the LONER western series, written by Rod Serling, plays a Poltroni, a notorious international drug dealer, one of those guys with lots of charm and lots of enemies. Of course, the real fakeout here is for the IMF team to get him safely out of another country to face trial and prison in the good ole USA. Poltroni will look nice in stripes!

I agree with the last reviewer that the only debit is the complex execution of the plan, and the team goes through lots of trouble. The question arises; why not just shoot the guy and be done with it?

But that's the story, and that's the mechanics of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, and why we love the show in the first place. Note the long winding road and chase, which actually leads to the Griffith Park Observatory! The classic convertable Lincoln has also been used many times, also on MANNIX.

Well directed by one of the best, Bernard Kowalski, who headed lots of classic tv shows and cult movies, later in his career directing JAKE AND THE FAT MAN, starring William Conrad, and why the comedy/drama was such a success.

Recommended for a Sunday late night. SEASON 1 EPISODE 12 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set from 2006.
