Now, being only the first episode, we have to extend it some charity .... or no, not really, because this is based on a series of novels, so it's not like they didn't already know where the story was going, and how the characters should interact. So we're quickly plunged into annoying and unsympathetic characters -- including our protagonist -- all punctuated far too often by blasts of loud music, as if desperately trying to give us some sense of comedic delight that the characters themselves fail to do.
The good news is that it does get better. Dawn Steele particularly shines in the next episode, and the remainder aren't quite so annoying. But trust me: they're all annoying gits here. And since the episode concludes by arriving at nothing more than the show's premise, you could actually skip it entirely and go on to episode 2 -- and that would be best.
