What a fun caper this was
"The Caped Crusader Caper" is one of the episodes of 'The New Scooby Doo Movies' that still holds up as a favourite of the show and is actually even better on re-watch.
Pretty much the only not so great thing is the less than brilliant animation. Granted, "The Caped Crusader Caper" is a long way from the worst-looking episode of the show but the animation has always been one of the show's biggest debits and "The Caped Crusader Caper" is not exempt from that.
Some may find that the episode does feel more Batman and Robin than Scooby Doo. However, there is still enough of a typical Scooby Doo mystery vibe and atmosphere that still makes it feel like it belongs in the show when there have from memory been episodes from the second season that feel out of place within the show. Shaggy and Scooby are still their immensely likable and funny selves, their friendship as ever endearing, and while the rest of the gang are not quite up to their level they're still used well and don't feel pointless.
Batman and Robin are even better, love their dynamic and they are incredibly charismatic characters and they interact brilliantly with the gang, while the Joker and the Penguin are excellent villains like "The Dynamic Scooby Doo Affair". The Professor character is also very enjoyable and one of the show's best and most entertaining secondary characters. Another standout is the writing, the writers clearly had a ball with this episode and it shows in how they practically embraced the camp and goofy factors with some particularly wicked and inventive puns, of all the 'The New Scooby Doo Movies' "The Caped Crusader Caper" is easily in the top 3 of the funniest.
A fair few of the show's episodes did feel over-stretched and overlong which affected the pacing and such. "The Caped Crusader Caper" is one of the tighter paced episodes and engrosses throughout. The music is atmospheric and energetic, with a catchy and infectious theme tune if not as iconic as the theme tune for 'Scooby Doo Where are You'. The voice work is very good indeed all round.
Overall, so much fun and one of the best of the series. 9/10 Bethany Cox
