Ann's response to Fred's notion that she needs a 'man around the house' - "A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle." - was a well-known slogan of the feminist movement of the 1970s (when this show was produced). The quote is probably most accurately credited to Irina Dunn [Patricia Irene Dunn](born 1948), who says she was paraphrasing an idea she read in college in 1970 (probably "A man without faith is like a fish without a bicycle." [Charles S. Harris, from his humor column in the (Swarthmore) _Phoenix_, 8 April 1958]). The quote often is attributed to Gloria Steinem (born 1934), who in turn credited Dunn in a letter to the editor of _Time_ Magazine in 2000.
