This is a remake of I, Robot (1964). Leonard Nimoy, who played the reporter Judson Ellis in that episode, played attorney Thurman Cutler in this version, a role played by Howard Da Silva in the original. This remake was directed by Nimoy's son Adam Nimoy.
The title is from "I, Robot", a short story first published in 1939 by Eando Binder. The story is based on this piece of literature, and not on Isaac Asimov's better-known short story collection.
Leonard Nimoy (Thurman Cutler) previously played Konig in Production and Decay of Strange Particles (1964) and Judson Ellis in I, Robot (1964). Along with David McCallum, Cliff Robertson, Peter Breck and Barbara Rush, he is one of only five actors to appear in both The Outer Limits (1963) and The Outer Limits (1995).
The action starts at Rossom Hall Robotics Laboratory. This is a reference to the 1920 Czech play "R.U.R." by Karel Capek. "R.U.R." stands for "Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti," which means "Rossum's Universal Robots. The play introduced the word "robot" to the English language and science fiction as a whole. It is derived from the Czech word "robota," which means "forced labour." Capek attributed the invention of the word to his elder brother Josef Capek, who died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in April 1945.
This is one of three episodes of The Outer Limits (1995) in which Don MacKay (Dr. Charles Link) appears, the others being Feasibility Study (1997) and The Inheritors (1999). Coincidentally, all three episodes are remakes of episodes of The Outer Limits (1963). The only remake episode in which he does not appear is Nightmare (1998).
