Mother of the Year/Year's Worst Tour Guide
kevinolzak20 March 2014
"M is for the Many Things" finds Shirley awarded the 'Mother of the Year' by Women's Journal magazine, getting ready to attend the ceremony in Sacramento. Eschewing Reuben's plane tickets, Shirley decides on the scenic route, but everything quickly goes wrong. They arrive for lunch at a small diner (Yvonne Wilder's fourth and last wisecracking waitress), only for Shirley to discover she left her wallet at home in another purse. Encountering a speed trap in Crater City, Shirley insists that the deputy (Rick Hurst, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD) take her to see Judge McElwreath (Edgar Buchanan, in one of his last roles), interrupting his planned fishing trip. She refuses to sign any confession or pay any fine, successfully beating the rap (they can't put the 'Mother of the Year' in jail!), then runs out of gas a short time later. By the time they arrive for the ceremony, a disheveled Shirley is left speechless after such a hard day, leaving Keith to explain how the family sticks together 'through thick and thin' (watch for Mitzi Hoag, in her third of four appearances). The featured song is Tony Romeo's "As Long As There's You," from the forthcoming seventh LP CROSSWORD PUZZLE.
