"Why Did the Music Stop?" guest stars Richard Mulligan, from SOAP and EMPTY NEST, fresh off his role as General Custer in "Little Big Man," later appearing the fourth season in "The Diplomat." He plays Dr. Jim Lucas, whom Shirley remembers as the doctor who delivered Tracy, who tells Shirley that he's been keeping tabs on their success for several months, and is working up the nerve to ask her a very important question. The kids believe they know what that question is going to be, and since their mother has been making noises about them living a normal family life away from show business, they band together and agree to quit. Shirley gets the message when she returns home to hear them rocking out with "I Can Hear Your Heartbeat," from THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY ALBUM. The featured song is "I'm Here, You're Here" (composed by Wes Farrell and Gerry Goffin), taken from the forthcoming second LP UP TO DATE. Of course, Gerry Goffin was the former husband of Carole King (divorced in 1969, after ten years of marriage), and together they had written much of the soundtrack of the 1960s- The Shirelles ("Will You Love Me Tomorrow"), Little Eva ("The Loco-Motion"), Bobby Vee ("Take Good Care of My Baby"), The Drifters ("Up on the Roof"), and Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." For The Monkees, Goffin-King delivered "Take a Giant Step," "Sweet Young Thing," "I Don't Think You Know Me," "So Goes Love," "Sometime in the Morning," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," "Porpoise Song," "I Won't Be the Same Without Her," and "A Man Without a Dream."
