- Riley Morgan is freed from prison after a seaman comes forth after six years to confirm his alibi for a murder. However, the seaman indirectly tries to use Morgan's situation to blackmail the principals in the case and is murdered.
- At San Quentin, merchant seaman Burt Stokes comes forward as a witness to tell the Warden that Riley Morgan, convicted murderer, did not kill Martin Kendall. Morgan is paroled but is not paid for his improper imprisonment by the state. Stokes via a note left in her son Jimmie's schoolbooks also offers information on the crime to Morgan's wife Lorraine, requesting $5,000 to help rehabilitate Morgan. Bill Worth, a freelance writer, is working with Stokes on the story, including Lorraine's hidden past. At the same time he is reporting to Lorraine's brother-in-law who is a vice-president of the company Martin left to Lorraine. Lorraine contacts Perry Mason about a manuscript she received that distorts the details. Not sure Lorraine will pay him, Stokes also hits up Lorraine's brother who does pay. Morgan calls it quits with Stokes when he senses Stokes is trying to blackmail others. Lorraine arranges to meet Stokes in a public park. Later Perry and Paul Drake find Stokes dead, and evidence incriminates Lorraine so she is arrested for murder.—richardann
- After serving 7 years in prison for murdering Martin Kendall, Riley Morgan is freed on evidence provided by Burt Stokes, a merchant seaman who has come forward after reading an account of Morgan's conviction and realizing that having left Los Angeles on board ship soon after the murder took place, had key evidence to prove him innocent. Stokes soon after approaches Lorraine Kendall suggesting that she contribute $5000 to Riley Morgan to make up for the years he lost in prison. Stokes is also trying to sell the story to a magazine writer who declines thinking Stokes' approach smells of blackmail. Lorraine agrees to meet Stokes but when he is found dead, she is charged with his murder and Perry Mason defends her.—garykmcd
