Cowley, Bodie and Doyle in an early outing; pretty representative of the rest of the series.

Warning: Spoilers
A gang of mercenaries execute a daring bank raid and escape using a light aircraft. The mercenaries sell themselves to the highest bidder as 'a private army' and are soon plotting their next job. CI-5 are on the case, and it turns out that Bodie has a personal score to settle with one of the gang.

From the moment the show starts, with Laurie Johnson's compelling theme tune and the unforgettable sight of a car plunging through a plate glass window, you know this is an action show; back in the late 70's this was one of the shows that was compulsory viewing for teenage lads such as myself. Teenage girls watched it too; apparently Shaw was a heart-throb amongst the ladies.

This is only the sixth episode of a show that was to run to five series and fifty-odd episodes. However the main characters are already fully formed and the show's style and pacing are very much the same as they were in later episodes.

An obvious difference between these early episodes and later ones is that Bodie and Doyle were driving BL cars; later episodes used Fords.

Yes you can tell it is the 1970's; boy, they don't make trousers like that any more....

This episode is interesting because there are scenes involving aircraft and two well-known actors play bad guys. Geoffery Palmer ('Jimmy' in the Fall and Rise of Reggie Perrin etc) and David Suchet (later to become 'Poirot') both do a pretty good job.

If you watch carefully the aircraft scenes betray a certain lack of budget; we see the engines start on the plane, we then glimpse the same plane (there can't be two with that paint job...?) with the engines off. The plane takes off over the home counties and is then 'pursued' by RAF jet fighters (Jaguars I think) meant to be flying just over 2000 ft but that are actually up to 20000 feet over somewhere that looks more like Scotland... we then see a different plane altogether in a long shot and no, we don't see any crashed plane even though there is meant to be one.... so yes, it is a bit cobbled together from stock shots in places but really it doesn't matter.

It is also possible to criticise the motorcycle scenes; the bikes change completely from one shot to the next, and so do the police cars, but again it doesn't seem to matter! Shaw and Collins were apparently not Clemens' first choice for Doyle and Bodie; Collins was eventually chosen to play alongside Shaw in part because they had worked together previously in an episode of 'The New Avengers', (but as bad guys!). Originally Shaw was (amazingly) to play Doyle alongside Anthony Andrews as 'Bodie'. They did right to change this; Anthony Andrews is a fine actor but I just can't imagine him in this rough-and-tumble role.

I've seen nearly all the 'Professionals' episodes over the years (apart from one that is considered too racist or something and has never been broadcast in the UK) and this one is pretty average.

This isn't a terribly sophisticated series, but then again it doesn't often take itself too seriously, either. Although there is often violence, the versions that are currently shown on ITV4 have been edited in minor ways for daytime viewing. For me it is all a trip down memory lane, so maybe I view it through rose-tinted spectacles, but it was one of the better action series on TV at the time.

A violent episode!

Warning: Spoilers
THE PROFESSIONALS – "Where The Jungle Ends" –1978 Episode six of the of the 1977 to 1983, UK, action-crime series, THE PROFESSIONALS. Gordon Jackson is in charge of CI-5, a group of men drawn from the SAS, Police and other law enforcement agencies. Their mandate is to stop acts of terrorism and threats against the UK.

A group of former mercenaries pull a bank job and make off with a large amount of cash and several safety deposit boxes. When the Police attempt to stop the gang's getaway, machine guns are pulled and used. Several Police constables are wounded and a couple of Police cars shot up.

The gang heads for a small airport where they steal a light plane. Off into the low cloud cover they head. A hundred miles later the aircraft is seen spinning into the ground. The Police discover that the wrecked aircraft is empty. The gang must have parachuted at some time before the crash, but where? Gordon Jackson's crack CI-5 team is called in to help. Since the job went off like a military operation, ex servicemen are suspected. CI-5 agents Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw draw the case. They soon discover that the gang is made up of mercenary types whom Collins knew from his days in the Congo.

The gang is lead by David Suchet, (in a pre, Hercule Poriot bit) a rather nasty take no prisoners, kind of solider. Collins uses his contacts from the old days and they soon identify all the gang. Now all they need to do is find them.

Suchet and his crew have taken all the stolen goods and presented it to big time crime boss, Geoffrey Palmer. It is an example of what the gang can do. Palmer likes their work and hires them for a big job. He wants them to hit a atomic research site and steal some papers. He has a overseas buyer with plenty of cash. Palmer tells Suchet that it will make them all rich.

One of the gang, Del Henney, is a bit homesick and sneaks off to visit his wife. CI-5 has the place under watch and swoop in when Henney shows. Into a room with Shaw and Collins he goes. The two CI-5 men give Henney a first-rate bit of "third degree". Henney is at first is reluctant to help. But when told he will be shipped back to Angola, he is more forthcoming in the information area.

CI-5, along with the Police, swarm the area where the mercenaries are hiding and soon flush them out. A lively fire-fight ensues with several deaths on both sides. Suchet is captured and given a right tune up by Collins before the cuffs are slapped on.

This is another fast paced and violent episode of a great television series.

Tough as nails

Warning: Spoilers
WHERE THE JUNGLE ENDS is another action-packed episode with a whole team of guest villains for our heroes to go up against. Chief of the lot is a youthful, almost unrecognisable David Suchet, back when he could be cast as a physically imposing character. Elsewhere we get STRAW DOGS actor Del Henney as an old contact and the suave and posh Geoffrey Palmer as an important connection. Lightning fast and tough as nails, this is what THE PROFESSIONALS was all about.

Army dreamers...

This is a another solid entry from the first season,
  • this time seeing Bodie and Doyle on the trail of a small gang of mercenaries who, after a daring bank robbery and escape plan, have got themselves hired out by a wealthy businessman/gangster who has a very lucrative job for them.

Guest stars David Suchet (as gang leader Krivas) and Geoffrey Palmer (as dodgy businessman Sinclair) lend this story some extra kudos, and are both very effective and convincing in their respective roles.

There's plenty of action too, and some good detective work by Bodie & Doyle as they close in on their targets. For Bodie, it's personal too, as he has a score to settle with Krivas - this all leads to a tense climax where Cowley, having stood the boys down, leaves them to pursue their target in whatever method they choose to employ.

Cowley briefly gets in on the action too, and there's still room for some humour along the way - especially when The Cow reprimands Doyle after a particularly explosive scene... not to mention Doyle's encounter with Sinclair's schoolgirl daughter!

This is an enjoyable and unusual story that has all the elements that make this show so good.

Where the Jungle Ends
Prismark101 December 2018
David Suchet is the leader of a group of mercenaries that has pulled a daring, violent bank job and an audacious escape from the air.

However all this was to impress one man so they can pull off even more valuable heists that would make the men rich enough to retire.

Bodie knows them, he once worked with them and together with Doyle they are out to stop them.

This was a violent episode but the production at times looked inept. Speeded up car chases, stock footage, it was badly edited at times.

Still Bodie and Doyle are a lot of fun even if it lapses into silliness. This mission is personal for Bodie.
