Frank Marker has been bought in by the head of a retirement home to investigate some missing items from one of the residents, Rose Mason. They want him to be discreet. Marker suspects that it might be a member of the staff, particularly the porter Harry Brierley.
At its heart this is a story that is eternal but fits so well with Public Eye.
Rose Mason is well to do and lives in a retirement home but she still feels that she is not yet ready for the knacker's yard. She has found love with Harry and they regularly meet and plan to run off together.
Her son Derek is concerned that Harry is only interested in money. Marker is under instructions to offer Harry a large sum of money to clear off.
It really is a case of whether Harry is genuine or just an opportunist.
This is a good character piece and well played by George Sewell as Harry. Some jokes, some flattery and plenty of reflection. I felt that Marker understood Harry. After all he could had gone off with a large sum of money.
I think this is also a case where Marker might have actually made some money for himself from his clients.
