D.U.I. begins with Attorney Preston Claymore (Charles Aidman) driving erratically down a busy street while drinking from a bottle of liquor and hitting a pedestrian. The pedestrian dies and Claymore is brought up on D.U.I. and vehicular manslaughter charges, but with this being a first offense the District Attorney (James A. Watson Jr.) believes there is a small chance of him being convicted and receiving the maximum penalty. Quincy (Jack Klugman), the victim's wife and an activist against drunk driving are all outraged by this which leads Quincy to do some further checking into Claymore for the sentencing hearing and he uncovers evidence that this may have been more than an accident.
This is an interesting episode where things seem pretty straight-forward in the beginning with a D.U.I. vehicular manslaughter case featured along with a closer look at the inadequate laws surrounding drunk driving, but then things take a turn and it gets more complicated. It was a pretty unique plot with a twist, so for that reason I thought it was reasonably good. The only problem is that there is a lot of time spent on addressing the legal aspects of drunk driving cases which is still an important concern, it just didn't have anything to do with the actual crime in this story. Granted, it took some time for Quincy and the rest to figure that out, but it just seemed way too much time was devoted to this only for it to be dropped with no resolution as the plot twist came into play.
Although a little unbalanced, this is still a pretty decent and original Season 7 episode which does feature a crime and a mystery and is well worth viewing!
