Jack Klugman is the only regular cast member who appears in the final episode of the series (The Cutting Edge (1983)), which was a backdoor pilot for a proposed series about a revolutionary new clinic. NBC did not pick up the new series.
This was not only the final episode of "Quincy M.E", it also served as a back-door pilot of a proposed series entitled "The Cutting Edge" with many of the characters that were in this episode. Also, Anita Gillette, who played Quincy's wife Dr. Emily Hannover, was to have become a regular on this series once "Quincy" went off the air.
In the opening scene, the falling cast iron pipes are actually painted cardboard forms used for concrete columns. As the "pipes" are crashing towards the camera, the paint is scraped off and you could read the lettering on the cardboard.
