- Gil Favor: Ask any townsman along the Sedalia, Missouri Trail and he'll tell you that drovers are nothin' but trouble. They work hard, play hard, fight hard. They're sons of the devil. But if you want to hear their side, just ask me. Favor's my name, trail boss.
- Jed Mason: I want Kels Morgan.
- Dr. Tom Jackson: That won't help your son. He's dead.
- Jed Mason: Lynched is the word. And it's simple justice to hand out the same treatment to the ones responsible.
- Dr. Tom Jackson: The whole town is responsible. Why pick on one man?
- Jed Mason: Two, Doc. We got the Sherrif locked in his own jail. He let the mob get Ben. Kels Morgan led the mob. When we find him, we're gonna string both of them up.
- Dr. Tom Jackson: What'll that give you?
- Jed Mason: We're gonna hang 'em in the middle of town. We're gonna hang 'em so high that every time the decent law-abiding folk of Provost look up, they'll remember what they did to a boy they never let reach his majority.
- Dr. Tom Jackson: He was guilty, Jed.
- Sam Harris: You're interrupting what in Ireland would be called a wake.
- Mandy Harris: Pa, he's a stranger.
- Sam Harris: We're not mourning the dead. We're mourning our own guilt.
- Mel Mason: Kels Morgan wouldn't be here, Doc?
- Dr. Tom Jackson: No, not unless he's down in the basement with the other rats.
- Dr. Tom Jackson: [Dr S Jackson Surgeon, Dentist and Undertaker] I'm in no mood to help anyone.
- Gil Favor: Do you want to ride on your horse or across him?
- Dr. Tom Jackson: I'll need my bag.
- Sheriff Mort Hendricks: You hunger so bad to see Kels killed, you don't care who gets killed with him, huh?
- Rowdy Yates: Look, Doc, I got two horses down at that livery stable, can outrun anything in the state.
- Dr. Tom Jackson: I never saw a horse that could outrun a bullet. I've seen Brett Mason up on that roof. He's got a buffalo gun.
- Rowdy Yates: I always thought a doctor was above everyone else, and would help a sick man no matter what.
- Dr. Tom Jackson: A dead doctor can't help anybody.
- Sheriff Mort Hendricks: You wouldn't figure that the men who voted me into office would build a gallows for me, would you, Mandy?
- Gil Favor: Telegraph? Where's it lead to?
- Kels Morgan: Union Army strung it up during the Occupation and left it for the Indian agent to communicate with the Capitol at Austin. Not that it's any good though. The Masons must have cut them.
- Gil Favor: Mr Mason, it's my guess that before sundown, you end up murdering a lot more people than just the Sherrif.
- Jed Mason: You got me pegged wrong, Mr Favor. You can't rile me into murder. Hanging the Sherrif and Kels Morgan is justice. In the eyes of God and decent men, it's justice.
- Gil Favor: You're like a loco steer, anything in its path has to be stomped to death.
- Gil Favor: Mr Mason, nobody can say you haven't got a grievance. But you're running down a wild road.
- Jed Mason: What do you think I should do? Raise my hand like a kid in school and ask the Judge to punish the ones that did it? In 15 years maybe I'd get some satisfaction.
- Gil Favor: There's some here that had nothing to do with that lynching.
- Jed Mason: The whole town's gonna sweat 'til I get my hands on Kels Morgan.
- Sam Harris: The cafe's closed today for a lack of enthusiasm on the part of the owner.
- Gil Favor: You the owner?
- Sam Harris: That's right. The cafe's closed but my front door is open. Come on in.
- Sam Harris: I found out the day I lost the use of my legs. I found out there are more important things in life than livery stables, or medicine books, or stores.
- Dr. Tom Jackson: Maybe Sam is right. Maybe it's time we stood up like men.
- Jed Mason: Wilt, I gave Ben everything I could. I gave him the best bed in the house, the best food. I went without so he could have the kind of clothes that pleasured him.
- Wilt Mason: I know, Pa.
- Jed Mason: Why did he do it? The Masons been respected in these parts since we settled.
- Wilt Mason: Let's go home, Pa.
- Jed Mason: Wilt, there's some things men have to do to preserve the name: men. If we leave this business unfinished, we'll be miserable 'til the day we die. And the day we die, the ground will spit us right out of the graves for the shame of having a Mason in it.
- Gil Favor: When the Yankees tried to collect the guns in the South, there were more guns underground than there were on top.
