Murray Bozinsky (Thom Bray), a private investigator for the Riptide Detective Agency is also a famous computer programmer and sees exciting opportunities in taking a job with a new software company. Boz's partners Cody Allen (Perry King) and Nick Ryder (Joe Penny) try to talk him out of it to no avail. They end up giving him a farewell party attended by all their friends on Pier 56.
But Boz has failed to adequately investigate the last detail (Many if not most would make it the priority) of taking any new job - i.e. checking out the company thoroughly. It turns out to be fake, a set-up concocted by Colonel Livtak (Mitch Ryan) - his former commander in Vietnam who intends to sell him to the Soviets. Boz has to hope Cody and Nick clued in on the ruse and can help him.
Cody and Nick become wistful for their days as MPs in the army where they first met Boz who was bound for a military prison for punching Livtak. They and Boz flashback to those memories made during the last days of the Vietnam War during the episode. Although flashbacks are used this is not technically a clips show. A clips show puts together segments from previous episodes. The flashbacks we see in this episode were specifically shot for it. They illustrate back story and help with character development.
We see that Cody and Nick took Boz under their wing when he needed it most, forging the brotherly bond between them which is the most enduring aspect of the show. The understated three-way bromance of the Riptide boys really resonated with audiences.
Another recurring theme of the series played out in this episode and others is the acquisition of conventional 9 to 5 employment being a trap crafted by malevolent corporate bosses which leads to misery. Getting stability in their lives via menial work was portrayed as a huge mistake.
