The Memory of Water
coltras3529 January 2023
The amateur sleuths are hired to bring a mansion's walled garden back to life, with help from inmates of the local prison. Events take a sinister turn when the owner's cousin is found drowned in the local fast-flowing river - and become even more mysterious when, just before the inquest, Rosemary sees the dead man alive.

A feature length edition of the enjoyable series starring Felicity Kendall and Pam Ferris, who are gardeners sleuthing on the side, and here they are up to their usual way of getting to the mystery. And mystery is quite riveting, had me stuck to the seat, watching. There's an estranged cousin roaming around, then Felicity sees him fall into the raging river, but not everything as it seems. There's plenty of twist and turns and exciting moments, especially at the end.

Deadly masquerading

Have always adored detective dramas/mystery series. This has been apparent from an early age, half my life even, when getting into Agatha Christie through Joan Hickson's Miss Marple and David Suchet's Poirot and into 'Inspector Morse'.

Whether it's the more complex ones like 'Inspector Morse' (and its prequel series 'Endeavour') and anything Agatha Christie. Whether it's the grittier ones like 'A Touch of Frost' (though that is balanced brilliantly with comedy too) and particularly 'Taggart'. And whether it's the light-hearted ones like 'Murder She Wrote'. 'Rosemary and Thyme' is an example of a light-hearted detective mystery series and always gives me a lot of pleasures and banishes the blues when watching. It is a shame that it didn't last longer because it deserved to.

"The Memory of Water" for me is one of my favourite 'Rosemary and Thyme' episodes. At no point does it feel dull, it's full of surprises and while the story is one of the busiest ones of the show it avoids getting confusing.

Visually, "The Memory of Water" looks wonderful, beautifully photographed, vibrant in colour and as always with the show with a stunning setting, have always been envious of the gardens seen on the show. The music has a lot of charm with a main theme tune that is soothingly folksy that matches the whimsy of the setting appropriately.

The writing is engaging and suitably light-hearted without being frothy. Some of the dialogue for Laura and especially Rosemary is very funny. The story is suitably twisty, with a very well done ending and one of the show's most unpredictable murderers, without being too convoluted, and is entertaining and with a relaxing vibe without being simplistic.

Similarly the characters engage, with Rosemary and Laura already being interesting and distinct in personality, and the chemistry between the two sparkles. Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris are simply great, individually and as a sparkling double act, love Kendal's fire and feistiness and Ferris' more restrained and thoughtful approach. The supporting cast are hard to find fault with too, particularly Tom Beard.

In summary, wonderful. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Guest starring Mary Nighy

Warning: Spoilers
Mary Nighy, the daughter of Bill "Love Actually" Nighy, guest stars in this season two opener of one of my favorite series of all time, Rosemary and Thyme. There's a gentle quality and charm to this series which stars Pam "Darling Buds of May" Ferris as Laura Thyme and Felicity Kendal as Rosemary Boxer. Anyway, I even read in an online British newspaper that Anthony "Silence of the Lambs" Hopkins enjoys watching Rosemary and Thyme! Anyway, this season two opener is a two-partner, and it's hard to believe it debuted 20 years ago, yet it's charm and quality is timeless. Definitely do yourself a favor and watch Rosemary and Thyme.

Interesting episode -- part two...

ROSEMARY & THYME fans should enjoy this episode--although I've only seen Part Two. I stayed with it until the conclusion.

Part II doesn't spend as much time in the garden routine as other episodes but has a wider scope including what appears to be an accidental drowning--or was the man pushed? As usual, the two friends go about quietly sniffing for clues and everyone is under suspicion. Principal character called Martin gets the most attention and is well played by TOM BEARD.

FELICITY KENDAL and PAM FERRIS are excellent, as always, and the busy plot will have you guessing "who done it" and why.
