Aunt Esther adopts a new husband
kevinolzak25 November 2016
"Aunt Esther Has a Baby" finds Aunt Esther and Uncle Woody (Raymond Allen, fifth of nine) determined to have a baby, that is to adopt an unwanted orphan that needs a good home so that they'll have someone to leave their most prized possessions to. Lamont is all too willing to help but Fred is his usual curmudgeonly self. Woody's penchant for seeking out every bottle within arm's length puts the interview in peril, until Fred finds himself recruited to play Esther's husband: "how can you drink a bottle in a half hour?" "you got a bottle and a half hour and I'll show you!" Lamont insists that his Pop maintain himself during the interview with Mrs. Sherman (Robin Braxton), to act like he's a happily married man of the house, and that he loves Esther: "I think I'm gonna throw up!" He reveals to his son how his feud with her has lasted decades, and that she never approved of him marrying her sister Elizabeth, either before or after the wedding. With her snappy retorts in response to his insults, it's a wonder she hasn't been called out as a hypocrite the way she clings to her bible!
