Fourth of nine with Grady Wilson
kevinolzak4 December 2016
"Aunt Esther and Uncle Woodrow Pfftt..." opens with Grady puzzled over a newspaper story: "some lady up in Sacramento burned her bra in a pubic place!" Lamont accuses Grady of being a dirty old man: "I'll be a clean old man when I'm a dead old man!" (Fred had a different response in previous episodes). Raymond Allen debuts as Lamont's Uncle Woodrow (nine appearances overall), often soused spouse of the intimidating Aunt Esther, first played by DeForest Covan in "The Engagement," his presence forcing Grady to hide the booze from 'Woody the Wino.' Woodrow had a row with his wife, having celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary without her! Lamont allows his uncle to stay with them for the time being, but a man gets thirsty: "that body is so shoddy, it don't need no toddy!" Grady can't believe that Woody never drank before he married Esther: "you had to be drunk to marry Esther!" Finding courage in a bottle, Woody takes Grady's advice and locks his wife out of the house. This was Hilda Haynes' only appearance as Aunt Minnie ('Minnie the Moocher'), while Dorothy Meyer returns for a second and final performance as Aunt Flossie, also previously seen in "The Engagement."
