"The Engagement" was the last episode in which Donna is referred to as 'The Barracuda,' and pretty much the last stand so far as trying to get Fred to marry her (one more minor effort in "Donna Pops the Question"). Much to Lamont's consternation, his father has finally given in and agreed to the wedding. Rollo advises caution as fools rush in where wise men fear to tread: "wise men never fall in love, so how are they to know?" With the special Sunday just two days away Lamont figures the thing to do is invite every uninvited member of the family, starting with the intimidating 'ugly Esther' (only the fourth episode for La Wanda Page). Fred is familiar with her side of the family, none of whom ever accepted him as the husband of their precious Elizabeth: "Woody the wino...Minnie the moocher and Jake the jackass?" "they're not gonna be here that long" "that's what the Indians said when they first saw the white man comin'!" Uncle Woody, Esther's husband, is played for the one and only time by DeForest Covan (his next 9 episodes by Raymond Allen), while Dorothy Meyer made one return appearance as Aunt Flossie in "Aunt Esther and Uncle Woodrow Pfftt..." Television pioneer Alvin Childress returns as Reverend Trimble (from "Here Comes the Bride, There Goes the Bride"), remembered for his starring as cab driving Amos Jones on the 50s TV version of AMOS 'N' ANDY.
