Second and final appearance of James Wheaton as Nelson B. Davis

"Pops 'n' Pals" opens with Lamont really hitting it off with neighbor Julio, leaving Fred alone to come up with ways to get his son's attention. His insults bounce off of the good natured Julio, who goes so far as to invite Fred to dine with them at a Mexican restaurant. By the time he tastes the sangria Lamont has already walked out in disgust! Ready to join Julio for a weekend in Tijuana, Lamont finds his father in a wheelchair from his latest heart attack, enough for a surprise visit from funeral director Nelson B. Davis (James Wheaton), first introduced in "Coffins for Sale." His sense of humor has not abated: "you know, burial insurance is something that everybody digs!" Julio actually knows what Fred's up to, despite Lamont's assurances that fake heart attacks keep him from leaving: "because he loves you, you're all he's got!"

Father Son Love

Lamont is devoted to his dad, even when Fred manipulates situations to gain support and sympathy. This is a human truth for so many, especially those who don't won't to be alone. Few are as selfish as Fred Sanford, in my opinion, though Episode makes you think about the elderly parent/child relationship, as do many "Sanford and Son", although not as much as this one.
