Fred likens the British singer's rendition of "I Didn't Care" to Moshe Dayan singing "When the Saints Go Marchin' In." Dayan (1915-81) was an iconic Israeli military commander and government leader, immediately recognizable by the black eyepatch he wore over his left eye.
Unlike a typical Gong Show episode, Chuck Barris does not do his usual shtick of comforting a contestant who was gonged and ask the judge who gonged him or her, "Why'd you do that?" He just moved on and forgot about that contestant. This may have been for time constraints or because the judges were not as high profile here as they are on an actual taping of the show.
When suggested by Lamont to invite Esther to the taping, Fred says, "This is The Gong Show, not The Goon Show." There was actually a British radio show called The Goon Show on BBC radio from 1951-1960.
Yet another character feigns a Fred Sanford-style heart attack: brother-in-law Rodney. This occurs when Rodney learns over the telephone from Chuck Barris that he will be solo competing in the same upcoming Gong Show episode as his, Fred, and Lamont's trio act.
