In the book "Live from New York - an uncensored history of Saturday Night Live", Rudy Giuliani recounts that when he was asked to host, he was uncertain at first, but Lorne Michaels managed to persuade him to do it. He found that the show was done in the same office building he practiced law in for four years. A Mango sketch was suggested for this show, but was rejected. Two sketches that were cut after dress rehearsal featured Giuliani as a tour guide fawning over the Statue of Liberty and one in which the Mayor was holding a press conference while his nephew kept jumping all over him (similar to the cold open from Jason Patric/Blind Melon (1994)). Out of all the sketches that did make it to air, the cab driver sketch was Giuliani's favorite, and second place went to the one in which he played Rita DelVecchio's mother.
