- Jerry is fed up with Kramer's coming into his apartment any time he feels like it and asks him to return his spare set of keys. Kramer begrudgingly complies but then lets it be known that he's leaving for California. As for the others, the one key swap leads to multiple exchanges on pretty well everyone's part. When Jerry forgets his keys, he gets George to let him into Elaine's apartment so he can get his spare set. What they find interests them.—garykmcd
- Becoming annoyed at Kramer's invasions of privacy, Jerry takes away his spare key. Kramer, shaken, decides to leave for California to pursue an acting career. As George, Elaine, and Jerry exchange spare key privileges, Jerry and George learn that Elaine is secretly writing a Murphy Brown script; Kramer, later, is hired to play Brown's secretary.—Anonymous
- In a montage of incidents, Jerry returns home only to find that Kramer has overstayed his welcome; he had been using the spare set of keys Jerry had left with him. Jerry had found Kramer inside his house, late at night trying to get the popcorn popper, in Jerry's bathtub while he was away doing a show, with a date when Jerry was supposed to be at the movies with his own date.
Exasperated, Jerry demands his spare keys back, angering Kramer. Knowing that he has broken the "covenant of the keys", Kramer realizes he is now free to come out of the shadows. Kramer then takes off for California to follow his dream of becoming an actor, after he is unable to persuade George to join him. Kramer realizes that having access to Jerry's house was holding him back, as Jerry had better food, better TV, better view and much cleaner. It was like Kramer had been on vacation all this time. Kramer says that getting a part in the Woody Allen movie has given him the acting bug. George says that the one line in that movie got him fired. In retaliation, Kramer takes his own keys back from Jerry and gives them to George. George takes his keys from Elaine to give them to Kramer. Jerry finds from Newman that Kramer has left town for LA. Jerry calls Kramer's mother but can't talk to her as she is drunk and has put on music at a really high volume.
On the way to LA Kramer's car breaks down and he has to hitch a hike with all sorts of weirdos. Including a biker who cracked open his own skull in an accident a year ago (he was pronounced dead at the scene, but later went into a coma for year before reviving), a murderous hippie and a lady semi driver, whose truck Kramer breaks down. The lady had invited Kramer to driver her semi after he sweet talks her, but he didn't know how to drive double clutch.
Jerry gives his spare keys to Elaine. As a result, Elaine asks George to return her keys, so that she can give them to Jerry. George fails to do that. Soon after, Jerry desperately needs his spare keys and goes to Elaine's apartment with George (who has the spare keys to her place), to search for his spare set. While there, they find Elaine's writing project for an episode of Murphy Brown. As they read and laugh over it, Elaine walks in and screams at them to leave because they've invaded her privacy.
Jerry is unable to locate Kramer to make amends. One night, while watching Murphy Brown with Elaine, Jerry sees Kramer in a famous bit part on Murphy Brown as Murphy's new secretary, "Steven Snell". Surprisingly, Murphy tells Steven that she has "a very good feeling" about him.
At various points in the show, a recurring incident involves Elaine and George each muttering disparaging remarks (including profanity) to Jerry under their breath in conversation with him. When Jerry asks them to repeat what they said, they both deny that they said anything. The remarks were in response to Jerry's adamant stance towards Kramer to return his keys, which upset the key balance across the group.
