One of the best storyline in "The Simpsons", i think.
stefanodellicarpini19 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really love the story : from the start to the finish. The episode start to the Marge's love about "Chad", that start point is for bringing the family to the real episode's story.

All thing in this episode are helpful to the storytelling (For example: Chad for the lake), even if the episode have goofs (Smithers Jr.'s age vs Homer's age) the condtruction of the plot are effective (In the first flashback Homer and friends heard felt of pressure in Mr. Burns's Nuclear power plant, that there are the reason of Smithers Senior's death).

It was a clever/studied episode, even if had lack of humor it was one of the best Simpsons episode, a must watching if you are a fan.

Marge loves Burly (Paper Towels)
safenoe23 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Marge accidentally buys Burly paper towels, but ends up falling in love with the Burly rugged lumberjack character on the label. Bart and Homer pair up to prank Marge into thinking Burly will turn up for dinner!! Marge gets so excited that she even paints Burly's portrait, reminding us of Marge's painting skills.

Then the episode veers to Homer and hypnosis, and with the aid of "Indian memory tea" (the Native American kind, not the Indian subcontinental kind), Homer's memories are unlocked, and we see flashbacks of Homer, Lenny, Carl and Moe. There was a funny nod to the Springfield gorge jump in Bart the Stuntman!

Also Paul Newman makes a cameo appearance.

Old school Simpsons feel
jussi-9330 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Although the Simpsons plummeted in quality after the sixth season, there have been moments after that when the episode (or even a large part of a season) emits a feeling of being made by the original gang. When I watched the fifth episode of season 13 of the Simpsons I immediately felt it. This episode really used the flashback angle well. The, at least for the Simpsons standard, creepy moment when Homer gets sent back in time in his mind to repressed memory of his childhood. We also learn some new intriguing things from Burns' and Smithers' past. You almost forget you are watching a cartoon the atmosphere being like it's from an 80's thriller.

You want to rate a comedy series based on the quality of it being able to make you laugh, not necessarily the plot or anything else. The only thing wrong with this episode might be just that; it didn't fire on all cylinders, comedy wise. There were still some laughs tough. Newer Simpsons tend to have episodes with nothing funny in them. Maybe the reason I like this episode more compared to rest of the season, is that it does something new and interesting while still feeling like the old school Simpsons.

Similar to New Tricks and Cold Case
racesgirl2000-130 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had everything; Humour, a hypnotist, an unsolved murder, laughs, a crank call and a dead body. Honestly, this episode is similar to New Tricks and Cold Case with the unsolved case and if Homer needed help from an unsolved case cop, he should have called either Detective Lilly Rush or Detective Superintandant Sandra Pullman instead of Police Chief Wiggum. The body was Smithers's dad who vanished 25 years previously and it was still a good episode all the way.

All in all, this episode is so New Tricks, Cold Case Squad, Cold Squad and Waking the Dead meets the Simpsons and this is a really good episode so if you you don't like it, that's your problem, not mine so there.

Great Episode, Excellent Show

Warning: Spoilers
Love this episode. I've always been fond of the writers referencing classic movies. This one is a parody of an all-time favorite of mine, Stand by Me. Additionally, it explores Homer's adolescence and his relationships with Moe, Carl, and Lenny in the past.

Season 13 is already better

Warning: Spoilers
A pretty good episode. Even makes up for the spoof at the end. in one scene where Moe is revealing his "clue" the table is there, then a few seconds later it disappears.

An episode that grew on me
studioAT20 January 2020
I wasn't keen on this episode first time around, but subsequent views have turned me around.

Homer's childhood memory comes back to haunt him here, but even though it gets a little gruesome, the heart of the show is still in the right place.

I enjoy this episode more each time.

Episode that tries to laugh something not too funny, too bad it does it badly and not even the twist makes it appreciable colìme bet, really a very mediocre episode.
