The Attack of the Invisible Being
claudio_carvalho18 March 2006
The teenager Amy Palmer (Azura Skye) has a crush on Lex Luthor. Her mother works in the Luthor's mansion and they live with her brother Jeff Palmer (Kett Turton) in the property. Amy is jealous of Luthor's girlfriend Victoria Hardwick (Kelly Brook), and Luthor and Victoria are attacked by some invisible being. Meanwhile, Lana Lang and Whitney Fordman decide to give a break in their relationship, and Clark gets close to Lana, but when he finds the motives for the attitude of Whitney, he approaches Lana to Whitney again.

"Shimmer" is another good episode of "Smallville". In this episode, the beginning of a romance between Clark Kent and Lana Lang certainly is the greatest attraction. The business advices of Lionel Luther ("Empires are not brought down by outside forces - they are destroyed by weaknesses from within."), some of them based on the "Art of War", are always very interesting. My vote is eight.

Shining Smallville
Jerique9 August 2010
Not a terrible episode, but not as great as say Cool. I like Shimmer for it's development for Lex and Clark's friendship and more specifically Lex's development. He's such an ambiguous character and especially throughout the first season.

Yet again, Clark doesn't really face off against a foe. In this episode, someone living at the Luthor Estate has found a way to become completely invisible and torment Victoria. Clark's struggle against them is due to their body being covered in a form of the kryptonite.

Lana's relationship with Clark grows but is ultimately doomed at the end of the episode. It's hauntingly beautiful how it's played out, though, and Chloe is visibly shaken by their growing closeness. Lex's relationship with his father is shown much more and I truly enjoy watching John Glover on-screen as Lionel Luthor.

As all the action, which there's quite a bit more than the last three episodes, special effects, visual effects, make-up and costumes, Shimmer is a delight to watch. It's not the greatest episode of the first season, but I enjoy it a lot more than Jitters.

Speaking of the visual effects, they are some of the best. As well as the special effects, as we get to see Clark once again use X-Ray vision and his other abilities including invincibility. There's just endless amounts of possibilities to dazzle the audience on each episode of Smallville, in a new way, but with the same techniques.

Jealous Amy
Rcwilkinson12312 September 2007
Victoria and Lex are attacked by something invisible. They realize that Amy, a girl who lives on Lex's property, is jealous of the gorgeous Victoria and was probably the one who attacked them. However, a surprise awaits them as to who the killer is. Victoria also begins to sneak around Lex's mansion, particularly his computer, to discover files which contain the secrets to LuthorCorp.

Meanwhile, Clark realizes why Whitney Fordham has began to act so moody- he is headed down a future that he isn't too happy with. Despite wanting so much to be with Lana, he sacrifices this desire and asks Lana to help Whitney and continue to give him attention.

An average episode, which means it's good. 8/10

A welcome serving of beefcake
dinky-45 June 2008
The first episode of "Smallville" provided us with a bit of beefcake in the form of Clark Kent, stripped to his boxers, tied in crucifixion style to a scarecrow post. Unfortunately the scene took place at night and the dim lighting didn't allow for a proper display of the Kent physique. Now, in Episode 10, we finally get a another chance to view Clark without his shirt and it occurs in the macho confines of a high school locker room. Clark, along with Pete Ross, is shown walking through the room, damp and glisteny, with just a towel looped around his waist. The towel sags low enough to allow a glimpse of Clark's navel plus several inches of flesh below this point. It's a brief scene but oh-so-welcome. A bit of beefcake is also provided by Jesse Hutch as Troy Turner, also in the sweaty confines of the locker room. Go Crows! Alas, Whitney is nowhere to be seen in a towel so the flex-off between him and Clark does not occur.

More character buildup between Lex/Clark and Clark/Lana
Brettyboy00718 September 2014
There are so many story lines going on in this episode. Lex is being haunted by someone working at his mansion...and she has an affection for him. Victoria is still at the mansion but is she really there for Lex and to overthrow LuthorCorp and her father's company?

Clark has his troubles with Whitney and Lana. Whitney is being distant from Lana so he decides to make a move. But he finds out why Whitney has been distant and makes a hard decision for him.

I really like the Clark/Lex character buildup and how Lex likes how Clark will not go after Lana after finding out Whitney's secret. There are a couple foreshadowing toward his destiny. Pete tells Clark "You''re not the flying type". Lol. You'll see Pete.

Typical Slow, but Entertaining Midseason Episode!
gab-1471227 November 2021
"Shimmer" is a good episode, not a great episode. It is a typical midseason episode with nothing truly at stake. The friendship continues to show growth between Clark and Lex, and the beginnings of a romance between him and Lana. So, we got some good storylines to cook with. That said, we are back with the villain-of-the-week process. Other than the whole invisibility power, I was not super impressed with the villain. Kind of distracted me from the story. We do have solid special effects as Clark has to use his x-ray vision once more.

In this episode, we meet Amy Palmer (played by Azura Skye). Her mother works at Lex's mansion. Along with her brother Jeff, they live together at the mansion. She also has a crush on Lex and is jealous of Victoria Hardwick. Lex and Victoria are later attacked by this invisible being and Chloe suspects this being is Amy. Lana and Whitney decide to take a break from one another. That gives Clark the opportunity to get close to Lana. However, he thinks the two of them should still be together. Lionel plays Lex a visit and become suspicious of her intentions with Lex.

Overall, a solid episode. Lionel Luthor and his "empire" talk is always welcome here. I just was not as impressed with this week's villain although it has a purpose of pushing Lex's character towards the dark side. The ending was not a happy one for Clark. That said, I am sure he will see better days.

My Grade: B.
