- TriviaDuring the rehearsals the band noticed that the smoke bomb effect was not to their liking so they asked the stage hand to pack a little more of the power into Keith Moon's drum kit to give it a more spectacular effect. However, while the band and the crew went out for lunch, Moon returned and packed even more powder into the drums essentially turning it into a bomb and during the finale of "My Generation" as the band were doing their usual instrument smashing finale, the drums exploded. As a result, Moon suffered cuts on his arm, Pete Townshend's hair caught fire. However, Townshend also suffered permanent damage to a hearing as a result of the prank.

A 10+ experience
I was at this taping with my fiancé', her sister and their parents .What a great show! All was right up to par including the sketches and performances by "The Who." This was the first time I had ever seen a group batter and blow up their instruments on stage. I recall it was during "I Can See For Miles and Miles" but could be wrong. Towards the end of the song, Pete (or Roger) twirled the microphone cord like a lariat and gave it a fling towards the audience. Next thing you know there was a guitar smashing into the base drum set and amplifiers which began flaming and smoking as the entire stage turned into chaos.
I also remember that either Pete or (sorry) Roger had a wardrobe problem concerning the fit of his satin tight-fitting trousers at the inner thigh. Everyone on stage and in the audience was cracking up when they finally had to do a retake. A bit embarrassing for me from where I sat watching with my future in-laws but still quite hilarious.
Paulson was right in there with his original personality and the guest stars were quite audience-friendly.
