S1999 correctly predicted the future. Again.

This episode is ripped from today's headlines. An unruly passenger loses their mind and leads an intrusion of the command center. They commit felony assault on crew members and surreptitiously grope Dr. Russell. All this in order to be taken to the happiest place in the solar system.

A Frontier Airlines flight from Newark to Orlando you might ask? Nope. Just S1999 once again accurately projecting future events. If Moonbase Alpha "Security" had only been equipped with duct tape and zip ties, poor Ken Hutchison wouldn't have bought the farm.

Bonus points for Maya's slapstick metamorphosis: first using a gorilla suit with a lizard head then as a 5 year old in a nightgown.

Well, at least it's different...

This show begins with a cult-like crew member getting his three minions to try everything they can to get the Moonbase to do nothing when there is a pending collision with a planet. While the planet clearly has a toxic atmosphere and cannot support life, this nutty guy insists that the crew should do nothing--and everything will work out fine. But, common sense says that Koenig should order the atomic piles to be exploded in a last-minute effort to force the Moon on a different course. In the meantime, the plan is for all the crew members to wait in Eagles in space--waiting until after the explosions have occurred. However, the nutter and his minions have other plans--and it might just include killing Koenig and Maya and stopping the nuclear detonations...all for the good of Alpha as the cult-like guy insists that doing nothing is their best course of action...or 'inaction' in this case.

So is this a good episode of "Space: 1999"? Well, not really...but at least it's not a blatant rip-off of episodes from "Star Trek" and there is only one goofy-looking alien in the show (when Maya does one of her transformation). The main problem, however, is that it's not particularly interesting. However, in a strange but cute moment, you do get to see a 'Mini-Maya'--which you'll just have to see to believe.

another one of year two's best

Warning: Spoilers
I quite liked this story, although it felt a little unusual. you usually don't see much of alpha's ordinary staff as the stories tend to focus on the main actors. this felt somewhat jarring, but the mutiny aspect was done well, we should really have seen more character conflict like this rather than people simply getting along, which is simply too perfect even for a disciplined crew. the leader was a bit like charles manson, his behaviour was so deranged it made you wonder how he had ever been trusted in the first place. good to see someone acting like a maniac though, and it did become a little frightening to see someone so unhinged. his friends were much more rational, which was nice, not violent like sanderson himself. this added some rationality to the cult like aspect of the plot. there was never any indication as too whether they actually made contact with any presence; contrast with mateo in the troubled spirit in year one where they definitely did something supernatural. the business with the gas planet was done very well, kudos to brian johnson and his team for more great fx work especially on the eagle crash (another one!) and the realisation of the planet's surface. koenig and maya made a good team again and their plight was tense. koenig appears very restrained and rational throughout, a good contrast with sanderson, like night and day. sanderson was one of the best villains the series has ever had, showing the face of human irrationality. there are similarities with commisioner simmonds from year one's earthbound, who also went out of control but did it all alone without support. how many of the alphans must want to do that, to take over they have faced so many dangers they must be getting desperate, and angry. sanderson and his team represent an understandable human reaction that was a long time coming. and they recreate the nuclear explosion from breakaway on purpose; good continuity, we needed more of that.
