The Book Episode 4.5

This is one of the best Spooks episodes I have seen and I enjoy it every time. They are replaying Spooks in Australia on Foxtel (cable) and it was a delight to watch - the recruitment of Jo, the different levels of cinematography with that awesome slow motion shooting scene, the beginning of the existence of The Club (Yalta) and the rotten core of MI5 - fantastic. Provides a good grounding in many of the complicated sub-plots that occur from here on in. It's particular;y interesting to note the flirtation with Jo and if you watch through the series that flirtation seems to stay between the two characters. Also good to see Harry take the high moral ground (yet again).

Clive McTaggart is a retired spy and was a sort of a mentor to Harry Pearce.

When McTaggart dies it is thought to be a suicide as he was suffering from cancer. However a journalist Gary Hicks was on the way to see him and sees something untoward. He finds himself being chased by some bad guys.

Hicks has sought out Ruth and the Spooks team needs to protect Hicks. Harry fears that a rogue element of MI5 killed McTaggart as he was planning to write a tell all book. They are out to kill Hicks.

The very people the Spooks team need to fear are in the same building.

An interesting angle looking at a rogue element of the security services. It also chimed in the climate of the time. The aftermath of Iraqgate and a sexed up dossier.

The episode also introduces Jo Portman a would be journalist who becomes a new recruit.
