Donald Westphall, Mark Craig and Daniel Auschlander visit the titular bar from the sitcom Cheers (1982), another NBC series based in Boston, and meet the barmaid Carla Tortelli (Rhea Perlman) and two of its regular customers, Norm Peterson (George Wendt) and Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger). Carla reacts with disgust when Westphall tells her that they are doctors from St. Eligius. She refers to the hospital by its derogatory nickname "St. Elsewhere" and says that she had a negative experience when she gave birth to her son there. In Little Sister, Don't Cha (1983), Carla mentioned that she was going to St. Eligius to have her baby. It is also revealed that Norm is Dr. Auschlander's accountant.
Dr. Craig had previously referred to Dr. David Domedian explicitly as if he were dead, even at one point saying "If my mentor, Dr. David Domedian, were alive today". In this episode, Westphall and Ehrlich are both surprised that Domidian is alive, having assumed the way Craig talked about him meant he was dead.
In a 1983 episode of Cheers, Carla refers to St. Eligius when she is going into labour.
