- A powerful being claiming to be the Greek god Apollo appears and demands that the crew of the Enterprise disembark onto his planet to worship him.
- The Enterprise is stopped dead in its tracks by a powerful energy force that appears in the form of a human hand. Soon, a being claiming to be Apollo orders Kirk (William Shatner) and several others down to the planet below. Apollo (Michael Forest) claims to have visited Earth 5,000 years ago and Kirk theorizes that he may be telling the truth. Apollo's demand for unquestioned servitude, however, doesn't give the crew much choice and it becomes imperative that they locate and destroy his power supply.—garykmcd
- The Enterprise are about to meet one of the most powerful Greek gods named Apollo (Michael Forest), but like all of the Greek gods, he has human emotions and some weaknesses, but very few. The Enterprise is travelling through space when a giant hand appears and grabs the ship. It is not flesh and blood, but it is squeezing the ship. They hear a booming voice. It is Apollo, the god of the sun. They decide they had better go down to the planet to find out.
Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Chekov and Scotty go down, along with Carolyn Palomas (Leslie Parrish), who is a very beautiful archaeologist who specializes in Greek culture. When they land, there is Apollo on a throne. He explains to them that he has grown lonely since leaving earth, and wants some human beings to worship him. He is handsome and wears a Greek toga. It is clear that he likes Carolyn. Scotty is jealous because he likes Carolyn too, and when Scotty tries to stop Apollo from acting powerful, Apollo flips him over a table and hurts him. Kirk is helpless as Phasers wont work, neither would communicators with the Enterprise.
Kirk and Spock suspect that Apollo is not a god at all but an alien, and they want to stop him and free the Enterprise. Kirk reckons Apollo and the other gods were aliens who visited Earth thousands of yrs ago and were worshiped as Gods. But then they got bored and returned back to their home-world. In the Eons that passed, one by one the Gods died, till only Apollo remained. Kirk also notices that once Apollo strikes Scotty with lightening, he weakens and needs time to recharge. McCoy also says that Apollo has an extra organ in his body that taps into a power source on the planet, and which gives him his energy..
So Kirk tells Carolyn to distract Apollo and keep him busy, so that he and Spock can figure it out. Apollo makes a lovely Greek toga dress for Carolyn and they go walking. Carolyn has fallen in love with Apollo, and he has fallen in love with her too. Kirk contacts the ship (After Uhura has rigged a subspace communication device to bypass the energy field erected by Apollo) and tells them to prepare the phasers. Then Kirk takes Cariolyn aside. "Lt Palomas" Kirk says "We must weaken him. The power source is his temple." Carolyn says "What do you want me to do?" "Spurn him" say Kirk "Make him angry, his anger will make him use power to throw lightning bolts, then he will be weaker." Carolyn looks shocked "He loves us Captain. He wants us to be his children. He will give us anything we want." Kirk scowls. "Just do your job." So Carolyn says to Apollo "You were just a specimen to me, a case study. I was studying you like a lab experiment." "That's a lie" says Apollo "You love me." Carolyn laughs at him. "How could I love you? I don't love lab experiments." She laughs again.
Now Apollo is angry. He calls lightning out of the sky, and weakens himself. Now the Enterprise shoots the ship phasers down to the planet to the Temple and melts it. Apollo is on the melted throne, crying. Carolyn is crying too. Apollo calls to his mother in the sky Hera. He says "You were right, Hera. Athena. Aphrodite. You were right. The time has passed and there is no room for Gods" Then he vanishes. Kirk looks at Carolyn. It had to be done. Carolyn never forgot Apollo, and she never dated Scotty.
