The arrival of the USS Defiant
Tweekums6 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Series Three of Deep Space Nine opens a few months after the last series ended; most of the senior staff are discussing what they can do to counter the Jem'Hadar threat to the station. None of the options look very promising and to make matters worse a cloaked ship is detected very close to the station. As Major Kira takes the station to red alert the ship decloaks to reveal itself as the USS Defiant, a new Star Fleet warship captained by Commander Sisko. Sisko wastes little time before taking the Defiant through the worm hole to seek out the mysterious and possibly mythical Founders. Talks with aliens Quark has done business with leads them to a relay station. Shortly after finding after learning where the station sends its messages a shield activates and captures O'Brien and Dax. The mission is so important that Sisko abandons them, heading onto the coordinates they found, unfortunately here they are intercepted by the Jem'Hadar despite being protected by a Romulan cloak. As the Jem'Hadar board the Defiant Odo escapes in a shuttle with an injured Major Kira and heads to the Omarion Nebula, somewhere he felt drawn to ever since shown it on charts earlier in the episode. Here they find a planet on which there is a strange lake, a lake made up entirely of beings like Odo.

This episode was a good introduction to the series and a great introduction for the Defiant even though as the episode ends it looks as if the ship might be lost before the mission is over. It was also nice to finally meet Odo's species even though we learn nothing about them at the conclusion of the first part of this two part story. With Dax and O'Brien left at the relay station and the Defiant boarded by the Jem'Hadar I can't wait to see the next episode to learn how the crew extricate themselves from the situation.

We really stepped in it this time.

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the search two part story.

The story gets moving right alone as a trek nerd's wet dream, "the defiant" is revealed as being the compact ass kicking machine brought in by Starfleet to assess the Dominion's strength. Starfleet is not happy with Odo being a bit of a grumpy cowboy who doesn't play well with others and brings in Michael Edington to handle all of starfleets security needs. Odo is not very impressed and decides to give Sisko the middle finger and tell him he's going to quit ---- but wait ---- Kira comes by and tells Odo that we need him on the Defiant to protect bajors interest ---- Odo doesn't buy it but who can resist those big puppy dog eyes of Kira? No man be he solid or liquid!

Odo is particularly grumpy at Quark and for some reason he's just fascinated by the Omarian Nebula. Quark makes contact with his dominion touchy/feely counterpart and we get more confirmation on the illusiveness of the 'founders' ---- has anyone actually seen a founder? Not according to this guy who ultimately provides Quark with a Vorta contact name.

We end the episode with the Defiant being discovered and left for dead floating in space by 6+ jem h'dar ships and Odo and Kira are on a shuttle heading to the Omarian Nebula. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Random thoughts:
  • Ben Sisko continuing the tradition of kicking ass. He took out 3? 4? Jem H'Dar with his brawler/star fleet jujitsu technique.
  • Odo might have a uncontrollable need to visit the Omarian Nebula but he still makes sure to save Kira. This is a duality that comes up again on multiple occasions.

Rom only has a son to think about. I have a business.

Sisko takes a crew to the Gamma Quadrant to look for the Founders.

This is an exciting episode with strong character moments.

One of the most apparent observations about part 1 of 'The Search' is the action/adventure focus it has compared to previous Star Trek stories. There is a central sequence that feels closer to Star Wars in style, that is spectacular by the show's standards, and quite entertaining.

Sisko and Odo are the most prominent characters and both have a memorable outings, particularly Odo who it appears to be geared up for some major development. The likes of Kira and Quark chip in with good support as well.

All actors are on good form, especially Rene Auberjonois who makes the most of good material.

Thems a lot 'o changes....
planktonrules19 December 2014
With the final episode of the previous season, the Federation came into contact with the Dominion's soldiers, the Jem'Hadar. These super-soldiers are insanely powerful, 100% dedicated to their masters and see humans as worthless maggots. And, in battle, the Jem'Hadar seriously kicked the Federation's butts! So, when season three begins, there are some big changes in store in order to meet this awful threat.

Commander Sisko is away doing briefings with Starfleet. When he returns, he has a HUGE surprise for everyone...a new ship! The USS Defiant is a very small but insanely powerful ship designed to meet the threat of the Borg. But, now that the Borg threat seems to have gone, it's to be based at Deep Space 9 in order to help protect it. But the biggest surprise is that this super-ship has a cloaking device--and a Romulan officer to serve on her!! Obviously the Romulans now consider the Dominion to be a greater threat than the Federation. Plus, over the last few seasons of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", the Federation has done a lot to improve relationships with their old enemies.

This two-part episode concerns the Defiant's first mission into the Gamma Quadrant. The plan is to sneak through the wormhole and take the attack to the Jem'Hadar and hopefully find their masters, the Founders--who are the real force behind the Dominion. Unfortunately, the ship, though powerful, fairs VERY poorly and Odo and Kira escape in a pod...seemingly before the ship is destroyed.

Chock full of excitement and violent--that's what I like in this series. While it took a long time to happen,...it's here! Well worth seeing.

The Best Way To Defend Yourself Is To Go On Offense!

*Quick Review:

Sisko shows up back to DS9 after spending time de-briefing with Starfleet.

He brings with him a little surprise......enter the Defiant!!!

And it has some little surprises of its' own.

A Romulan Tech officer.

We are going to spend most of our time in the next two episodes in the Gamma Quadrant searching for the Founders.

Odo acts really weird in this episode. He seems to be acting a bit like a salmon who must return to the river in which they were spawned. It is a built-in passion no matter where they are in the ocean, no matter what obstacles are in their way - they WILL return to the stream or river in which they were born. Amazing isn't it?

Tons of Action.

Tons of suspense with the ending of part !.

Searching for the Founders
Hitchcoc10 October 2018
There is a new adversary, as I mentioned before. They are threatening the wormhole and the Federation. Sisko decides to take matters into his own hands and search for the Founders, hoping to create an alliance. There are deadly confrontations along the way and part of the crew is lost. Meanwhile, the subplot involves Odo traveling to a planet and finding his roots (his puddle?). This is continued in the second part.

The real plot is hidden, like a Changeling
makiefer-871281 January 2024
Odo is searching for his people on his home planet. What a depressing plot. It's fitting because the real plot is hidden: The Federation needs to be dismantled. Q tried everything on the simultaneously running The Next Generation show to turn their crew real. It didn't work. Captain Picard, in the last TNG episodes, gets judged (again) in front of a court headed by Q, and it does nothing. From here on, Deep Space Nine can only witness the destruction of the Federation - from a (originally) Cardassian station. DS9's producers, from now on, only have to worry about picking episode titles that sound the most depressing. The rest is silly wars. The wars don't even have to make sense, and still feel real, because Q is established. Q won't care about sense any longer. And it STILL might feel real.
