Story violates STOS canon. During the 1990's Earth fought the Eugeneics wars. Sophisticated spacecraft were already in use as Khan was found on. This was a devastating world conflict but it seems to have not effected the USA. STNG first contact shows a people of a war torn America in 2063 Yet never explains what was the cause. So they have a nice story that the writers pretend there is no past history to explain.
Ensign Kim mentions an uncle in 2210 who piloted a ship for 6 months to reach a nearby star system. The journey was so long that most of the crew was kept in stasis until they reached their destination. Star Trek Enterprise took place in the 22nd century (beginning in 2151) and established that the people of Earth could travel at least warp 5. They could reach nearby stars much faster than 6 months and there was no cause to put crews into stasis.
When Chakotay arrives in the Ready Room with a ships status report and gets the history of Captain Janeways' ancestor Shannon Odonnel she essentially explains the remainder of the story by telling the audience that she married Henry Janeway and became a consultant on the Millenium Gate before the story is even finished. This scene should have been at the end of the show not in the middle. Basically they spoiled the end of the story before even showing it.
Shannon says she'll "email everyone in 100 miles".
That isn't something someone can do.

When giving facts about the Great Wall of China, Neelix mispronounces the name of the Qin empire as "kin" when it should be more like "chin."
When Commander Chakotay entered the room to update Captain Janeway on the ship's status, she responded with, "Let me guess. The holographic engineer is encountering program issues, and Neelix, the Cardassian cook, is running low on supplies..."
She unintentionally referred to Neelix as a Cardassian cook instead of correctly identifying him as the Talaxian cook.

It's been established that Shannon O'Donnell was in Portage Creek in the winter, however none of the people waking around show any signs of being cold. Their breath isn't visible, their cheeks aren't flushed, and their noses aren't running. Clearly they're not "on location."
The timer counting down to midnight is counting time down slower than it actually passes. This is common with most of the later Star Trek measurement of time, where a second lasts longer than it usually does. While it could be explained that by the 24th Century a second stands for a longer unit of time than it does today, any such change is not present by the year 2001.
When Neelix and Seven talk in the mess hall, a crewman walks up to the counter. Just as he walks away, to the left a fly can be seen flying upward over Neelix's left shoulder. It is not inconceivable that there may be insects aboard the U.S.S. Voyager.
When Shannon O'Donnell rear ends her car into the other car she is seen taking off one of her gloves to hand a pen to the other motorist then putting the glove back on. After she gets back into her car she's attempting to start her car and her glove is off that hand she just put on.
This another story dealing with earths past that ignores the eugenics wars (WW 3). This war according to the original series took place in the 1990's. Was the USA not involved in this conflict.
Neelix erroneously states at the beginning of the episode that the Great Wall of China is visible from space. This mistaken belief dates to well before satellites were even invented.
Captain Janeway remarks that, ever since she was a child, she's been fascinated with her ancestor Shannon O'Donnel and her work on the Millennium Gate in 1999. In Future's End (1996), when Janeway is on Earth in 1996, she remarks that she had no idea what her ancestors were doing.
When Janeway shows Seven of Nine the Millennium Gate, she tells Seven that one of her ancestors built it, but doesn't specify the ancestor's gender. But Seven somehow knows to use a feminine pronoun without any further information from Janeway.
