I'll Go Against the Grain Here
franzooey6 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, yes, yes. This is a "clips" episode. Footage from previous season-one episodes are folded into "Politics," which is usually a clue that the writers were struggling with ideas or simply needed a creative break.

But I like this episode, so let me defend it. For one, the clips aren't terribly long, and they do fit better than they do in the much more forced "Out of Mind" that ends season two. Also, "clips" episodes typically have very flimsy frames that basically exist to set up the past footage, and though some might argue that "Politics" does exactly this, I disagree. An important character, Senator Kinsey, is introduced, played by Ronny Cox, who is phenomenal as the budget-conscious, God-loving (and God-invoking), probably Republican official who will become an important figure in future SG story lines.

Moreover, the episode's central premise, a heated debate in the conference room, is well-acted, well-scripted, and passionate. Kinsey wants to shut down the SG because it is a fiscal drain, and he also considers the Goa'uld an overrated threat (he believes that America, which is protected by the hand of God, can defeat any invader). Hammond, O'Neill, and the rest of SG-1 believe otherwise, of course. They've been off-world and know what's out there; they've dealt with the Goa'uld first hand.

So, sure, if you love action and a fast-moving plot, "Politics" will disappoint, and the fact that it also folds in clips will only deepen that disappointment. But for those who love debate-driven drama (think of courtroom scenes), there's much here to like once one forgives the past episode footage. This is where the O'Neill-Kinsey standoff begins, and the episode's ending actually sets up the excellent finale that follows. Give "Politics" a chance...even though it's a "clips" show.

This episode can be skipped.
spinozasgod11 December 2010
Daniel returns to Earth with a warning about an imminent threat towards earth. The members of SG-1 are tested and their true loyalties are shown to be towards the Stargate program and the fight against the Goa'uld.

This episode is simply a recap of the first season, cleverly disguised as a Senate review of the Stargate program. If you want to review the whole first season at once watch this episode.

If you're watching the show through, there is nothing contained here that you haven't already seen.

The only plot points that further the overall story arc are contained in the first five and last five minutes of the episode.

Watch that, unless you're a completest.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode follows immediately after the events of There But For the Grace Of God. This episode serves as a plot device to make it difficult to save the planet because the president has shut down the Stargate program through the Senate Committee of Senator Kinsey. Kinsey played by Ronny Cox is a caricature of the most annoying, frustrating character ever put to screen. He is deliberately antagonistic, completely unlikeable as a character which makes trying to engage him worse in that he was making good points. Ronny played the character way to bullish and over the top. If the character was toned down and sensible, at least his points would have been acceptable, but due to the tone, he comes of as stupid, and foolish. Obviously the point, but that because the episode needs him to be stupid and foolish just to give the Stargate team an obstacle to save Earth.

All in all this episode is annoying at best, stupid at worse. If you want skip it by simply knowing that Daniel conveys his message to SG1 and the base. They barely believe him, but now they can't go to the coordinates because they are shut down.

Watch the first five minutes. That's it. That's all you need. The ending is just the program has been shut down.

Clip shows drive me crazy but I realize they were a necessity back in the day since the production ran out of money and clip shows are very cheap to produce. But most of the time they are skippable and the b-story is never worth it.

Forgettable and Absurd Recap
claudio_carvalho6 June 2015
General Hammond summons Jack, Sam, Daniel and Teal'c for a meeting with the prepotent Senator Kinsey to discuss the future of the Stargate program. Kinsey has been advised by Colonel Samuels, who is a great antagonist to the program, and wants to shutdown SGC. The SG-1 exposes the last missions and Daniel advises that Earth is in danger with the threat of a Goa'uld attack. What will be the fate of SGC?

"Politics" is a forgettable recap of Stargate SG-1 with a silly and absurd story. Imagine a great nation like the United States with the opportunity to visit different worlds if they would shutdown a program like that based on an stubborn old senator. My vote is four.

I wonder how many reviewer's have an agenda...
up-3914422 January 2021
I started watching SG-1 from the beginning again, it's been years, I've been enjoying it quite a bit. This was a good episode, not the best but it was entertaining. I betting a lot of the really low reviews and over-the-top negative comments are actually about politics or religion.

No one ever said he was a Republican, I think he acts like a Republican so Republicans assume that's what they're mocking.

After the last four years, I actually think the senator doesn't even look that outrageous. He doesn't care what the facts are, he's arrogant about it, and the reason evangelicals don't care about climate changes is because "God wouldn't let that happen"

It is not that far of a jump to assume if they were in power and start it was a real thing, they'd say the same thing about this.

Absolutely Pointless
thespirituk30 December 2015
Let me say that I am a huge Stargate SG-1 fan but episodes like this make me want to throw in the fan towel. When will writers and production companies learn that these type of episodes are beyond ridiculous - statement not question. To be engaged and drawn into an episode there has to be a great story to tell at its heart. One that could lead to you wonder what the eventual outcome might be or how it might shape a future thread. Unfortunately these politically driven 'oh look the Stargate programme might be shut down' pieces of drivel are worthless airtime as we all know the outcome before they even begin. Therefore we watch them once simply for the point of completeness of knowing we have watched the entire series but we'd never watch them again.

That's the case in point with this episode. If you're new to Stargate (and there are people who still haven't watched it) then just skip this garbage as you won't miss a single thing from the overall story. The only you'll realise from watching it is that it's a painful way to spend 44 minutes.

I like this episode

I like this episode

I dont agree with other reviews. It is maybe summary but not a boring summary. It was good to remember again, how teal'c joined them for example. I did not watch all episodes in one day, so maybe that is why it was good to remember again.

And they really fight against political dirt where they are really weak. It was good to see also how they struggle but it was desperate.

Could've been much worse

Warning: Spoilers
Extremely similar to the X-Files first season cliffhanger where 'major government program that is also the title of the show is shut down'. As for recap/clip show, it wasn't as bad or unimaginative as something like TNG's Shades of Grey, but I did find myself skipping forward through the episode a lot, since I've seen every episode up to here. However, it did offer some self-aware and interesting arguments where the writers question themselves and reflect on the season's coincidences and plot conveniences, so if anything, that was slightly redeemable.

just a summary of what we have seen before
trashgang23 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Why does Stargate exist? Why is there so many SG teams to go through the gate. Answers must be given to a doubtful senator, well played by Ronny Cox. So far so good but be honest. This is just a recap of the first season and the pilot flick.

There are lot of scene's that were nice to see again but further this episode doesn't deliver anything new except for the fact that it picks in with the wound on Daniel's arm from episode 1.19.

The answer at the end is simple, shut down the stargate project...But by now we all know that it doesn't. It's also the first episode that has the end credits, to be continued.

What a pointless garbage
klusik14 March 2020
I don't get how's this episode a thing. It's just NOTHING, just a pointless recap, introducting stupid politics into series (which subsequently destroys the show for me, same as the X Files had been destroyed because of this "politics" episodes).

This is really absurd, I know they had to tell a story (or tried to) about how's the SG even a thing (of course it should cost money, it's a government military program, so what to expect?)

I know there are a few more episodes like this garbage later on (yea, in the middle of my 5th SG marathon, now it's about coronavirus holidays :-D) But hell I remember I even hated this episode when I first see it in TV around 2000 (dubbed in my language and still hated it :-))

A clip show for sure, but one with Drama and some setup
jonathanberry-137989 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
There are episodes I like to skip with SG-1, most all are in Season 1.

But this clip show actually has a pretty decent degree of drama to it.

It introduces us to thorn in the side character of Kinsey, who is easily the most easily despised Tau'ri human character on the show.

Heck, he's worse than a low of the Gou'ld.

So even on a rewatch I typically include this episode.

But it is hardly a normal episode, besides clips there is none of the regular cast no gate travel.

One thing I like about this and some of the other episodes

Where the actions of the team are questioned, if it gives an interesting and important perspective even if I don't ultimately agree with many of the points, some points are valid to a degree.

We know that if they never find the Stargate, Earth seems to be eventually invaded anyway but in the short term gate travel has many times endangered earth and only by the skin of their teeth have SG-1 managed to avoid calamity, and not in all realities, and not always the first time through (time travel can save the day).

If you want to skip episodes, skin ep 3, Emancipation, and skip ep 4 and 5 (Broca & easily my least favorite ep. The First Commandment).

Skip Brief Candle (I mean, it's kinda boing and very implausible) and most with Teal'C's family are not so great, I like Teal-C but don't like his family and it never made sense he left them to suffer the wrath of Apophis), and they are not good to him until eventually Rya'c comes around.

Just a recap
kykerlejan25 July 2022
I'm rewatching the whole show and this episode is just a pointless filler recap.

Some reviewers here mention this episode was getting review bombed because of politics but i don't think that's the case at all. I just don't wanna sit though the same footage all over again. It's so boring I rather went and wrote this review instead.

I like the show a lot but this episode was terrible.

One of the Weakest Episodes
memprys15 July 2021
"Politics" is one of the least-good episodes of an outstanding series. Like the infamous Next Generation episode "Shades of Gray," it is a clip episode with the flashbacks loosely connected by a poorly written uberstory. The original bits are a political "hearing" with bickering and insults being used to pad the episode runtime. This was obviously made to stretch the season budget.

Captain Jellico Strikes Again!
thevauntedq14 January 2021
I don't know why so many people are knocking this episode, I found it very beneficial. I suffer from a condition called immortality and I require large amounts of cannabis to function for any period of time on your plane of existence. Sadly, memory gaps are a side effect.

This episode helped fill me in as to why I hadn't touched the remote on the FireStick the past 19 hours. It helped me realise the main character was Macguyver, they that Doughnut Guardian of Forever looking thing was a Stargate and the aliens built the pyramids as I've long known since I'm the One that began it. And several wars.

Frustrating. Frustrating. Frustrating. Frustrating.

I'm new to this series. As in I didn't watch it real time and have just now started to watch it. I've pretty much enjoyed the earlier episodes. But. Uuuuuuuuuuugh. This episode is awful. Awful. Awful.

Retrospective?
Calicodreamin17 January 2022
How odd for a show to have a retrospective before the first season is even over?! The information is too new for it to be forgotten and there is no need to relive. Boring and unnecessary episode.

Ignore at your leisure.

What happens in this episode: Military inquest to shut down the mission and destroy SG.

Flashbacks that should prove value of mission but ultimately fails to do so.
