Annoying and sad episode

Warning: Spoilers
The neurotic Elaine seems determined to pass-along her insecurities and weaknesses to her young son in this ridiculous episode. For reasons that are never clearly explained,Elaine is raising a son by herself without a husband. It is a mystery,it is never clearly said whether Elaine was once-married and now she's divorced,or if she was married but now widowed,or if she was never even married to begin with.

Elaine's young son wants to start to learn boxing as a sport.

Tony Banta, the taxi driver colleague of Elaine is also an amateur boxer. Tony Banta is supportive of the young man's budding interest in boxing and offers to coach and mentor the boy in his boxing career. He explains to Elaine that learning boxing is indeed rough but it is still pretty safe. There are sensible rules, the boxing gloves are padded, and there are referees to keep things fair and to prevent things from getting out of hand.

Organized youth boxing is much safer than the bare-knuckled schoolyard fights that all boys get into and manage to survive.

Elaine is terrified at the thought of her 'baby' in a boxing ring. She doesn't want to let the kid box,and most of the show involves her debating this topic with her co-workers.

Pretty-much everyone tries to tell Elaine to let the kid box,he's a boy,let him be a boy for heaven's sake! Treating the kid like a baby and forbidding him to do normal boy activities surely cannot do him any good.

Most of the episode involves Elaine worrying herself half to death over this normal childhood sport. It is tedious and rather annoying. You cannot help but feel bad for the kid and wonder where the father is,as it is obvious that he is needed and missed. A child needs a father, moms can only do so much by themselves. Elaine is trying her best but she has her limits.
