This was the last appearance on the show of Carol Wayne, who died exactly one year later on January 13, 1985 in Mexico.
Johnny Carson explained why a giant eye was behind him at the start of this episode as well as a few previous shows at the beginning of the new year: It was a tribute to George Orwell's "1984" novel. He decided to retire the eye because viewers were writing and calling in, "deeply disturbed", and others were so distracted by the eye that they couldn't focus on Johnny's punchlines.
Carol Wayne is being interviewed by Johnny Carson, on the chair closest to him. She is doing her clueless shtick and---when the camera cuts to the other women---Brooke Shields and Susan Sarandon look equally uncomfortable at her "dumb blonde" antics.
