This was the last episode filmed while Charles Bickford was still alive. He died the day after it aired.
Throughout the series, the real name of the main character is never revealed. Great pains were taken in the writing to avoid anyone (including the character) calling him by name. This includes him introducing himself as "the foreman at Shiloh" or having others call him things like "ramrod" or other job titles. This episode is rare in that when he takes a job, he uses an actual name- Ed Morgan. It is believed this was not his real name, which also was never mentioned in the book.
This was a rare episode to merit a sequel, "Fox, Hound and the Widow McCloud," in the following season, with Victor Jory reprising his guest role as Luke Nichols.
The blue kitchen at the Standish ranch is the same kitchen at the Shiloh ranch.
If you're watching carefully there's Harrison Ford with a small speaking part as a young rancher.
