Ben Harness kills Cathy Eckhart's father and admits it. A trial finds Ben guilty and hanged. As they approach a pass they meet a Army patrol who warns Adams about threatening Kiowa Indians and that no trains make it through the pass. They suspect a renegade alerting the Kiowa is traveling with the trains. Adams hired Jefferson Miller to scout the pass. Adams doesn't trust Miller so he has Hawks tail him. Hawks catches Miller at a fire pit and brings him back to the train. They find Cathy Eckhart hanged and scalped on the return. Adams brings Miller, Whitey, the Preacher, and Sarah Harness, Ben's widow, to see Cathy's body. He has each person tell their story to determine who the murderer and renegade is or the train will turn around. Each person tells their story allowing new details about the first murder to surface. Cathy's father caught her and Ben as she kissed Ben. Cathy asked the preacher to have Ben stay quiet about it which he did but Sarah wanted Ben to confess the truth. It appears Miller is the likely culprit until he shows Adams he is Army Intelligience. The Preacher states he saw Sarah bring Cathy there at gunpoint and hang her. Sarah admits to all but the hanging. Adams and Miller sound like they found the renegade but did they? Maybe not.
