Warning: Spoilers
When I first watched this episode in 1979, I never picked up on Paul's many hints about being German, such as the Great Black Forest or the song O Tannenbaum we sing as Oh Christmas Tree. The family's holiday toast to missing cast members did little to bandage the gaping holes of their absence. Paul would have had a beard if he was living rough in winter. How long did he stay? Did he give back Jim-Bob's favorite shirt? Concentration camps were more for Japanese Americans back then. The Walton household never turned anyone away, and tolerance goes a long way to resolving conflicts and righting wrongs - something people are all too quick to forget today.
