Democratic Pie Fights
Sonatine9725 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The Republican convention has been "4 days of Swiss watch precision", according to Leo. Whereas the disorganised Democratic convention might just turn into a pie fight!

Such is the disarray among the three Democratic contenders (Santos, Hoynes and Russell) that Leo hauls in the respective campaign managers (including Will Bailey and Josh) to lay down some ground rules before the Convention begins in earnest before an American TV audience.

One of the problems for the contenders is who to pick as a running mate. Russell offers Santos the VP job if he is willing to surrender his convention delegates. and to compound Josh's stress levels further he learns that Russell has influential Senator Baker as backup in case Santos says no.

Santos is very tempted with the offer, while Josh is still on the fence, despite being leaned on by Leo, who not only wants a good convention but a strong ticket to compete against Vinick, the presumptive Republican nominee.

The other major story, that will run well into Season 7, centres around a top secret military space shuttle, that may have to be put into service in order to save 3 crew members aboard the stricken International Space Station.

So secret is the space shuttle that not even CJ, as the Chief of Staff, is aware of its existence; and not helped by some measured reticence from Kate Harper or Secretary of Defence, Hutchinson.

But eventually the truth is revealed and the president has to make a decision whether to use the shuttle or not. If he does then it could become public knowledge that the Americans are weaponizing space, which will force China and Russia to do likewise.

On top of all that, Greg Brock, a reporter for the New York Times, is about to release an exclusive about the military space shuttle, and how it will be used to help the ISS. So clearly its existence has been leaked to him; but by whom?

Two fascinating storylines that will run and run right through most of season 7. After an uneven start to season 6, it seems to be finding its feet again near its end, with some fine performances from Whitford, Janney and Schiff.

Whitford (Josh) in particular, does a fine job standing up to Leo's demands for him to make Santos the VP candidate, or to step off the stage completely. But for the first time in a long time, Josh refuses Leo's wishes, purely because he is not convinced Russell can compete against someone like Vinick.

Leo backs down, disappointed; but its a fine moment for Josh, even though he knows he has not only said no to Leo, but ultimately the president (Although it would have been interesting if Bartlet had insisted as commander in chief).

A bold move, but a well crafted scene.
